Insert sizing:
The 1675/16750 ...............have an I.D. of 30.2 and an O.D. of 37.75mm
The 16700/16760/16710.... have an I.D. of 30.7 and an O.D. of 37.65mm
Larry

I just checked the size of the original pepsi insert and came up with an ID of 30.26 and OD of 37.82mm - close enough to what you had and I was using a manual micrometer, not digital.

The black insert that I was sold has an ID 30.24 and OD of 37.91?? Tried everything to get it to fit but no joy. Do you know if there were ever these kinds of variations? The ID being the same as your measurements of the 1675/16750 rule out it possibly being for the 16700 series as I originally thought may be the problem.

I am certain this is an original insert. Any ideas?

Great info! thanks!

Great info and we learn something everyday. However, I have two questions here (search through and can't find it in this forum. If yes, please send the link to me. Thanks!)
1. what's the different between GMT Master II TT and GMT Master II SS?
2. the home time & local time could be read simultaneously on the face of the watch, how to read the third time zone? (I remember I read it somewhere GMT Master II can show 3 time zones. Right?)

1) There is no difference exept for the added gold color.

2) The third time-zone is only momentarily shown by turning the bezel

Thanks Larry. Fantastic info in a concise and clear way. All the better now I have one on the way to my front door!

Thanks!

I found this on the internet on how to use bezel to read the third timezone.

Enjoy.

It is indeed true

ETT 29 June 2010 02:14 PM

Thanks Larry for a great thread and a great explanation of the changes through the years. I'm a newbie looking to buy my first GMT in memory of the one my Father had lost. A very sentimental purchase and I want to get it right. Your info and links have really been helpful in my research and trying to figure out the model year of my father vs. buying a later model year.

As Terry said, it is indeed true.. (although I'm not sure what you mean by cert)

Let me expand though..

It's not really the "old GMT hand" that cannot move separately...It is a different watch..

The original GMT is the GMT Master. This watch has a 24 hr hand that moves at 1/2 the speed of the standard (Mercedes) hour hand, is syncronized to it, and the 24 hr bezel is used for all the variations and zones for the 24 hr hand. This watch was produced from 1954 up through 1999 and was still available into the 2000's..

The GMT Master II was introduced concurrently (both models were out at the same time) in the early 1980's and came with an independently adjustable hour hand; the 24 hr hand is still the same as it always was........... It is also still produced today..

So, to be technically clear... on the GMT II, the hour (Mercedes) hand is independently adjustable and always has been....not the 24 hr hand (some may call it a GMT hand, but that is the name of the watch, not the hand). On the GMT Master they are synced.

There is an almost 20 year period where both GMT models were produced/available; the GMT Master and the GMT Master II.

All 16710's have been produced after Rolex began using 904L steel..

Speaking of Pepsi bezels - in a different thread discussing bezels, another member named "Speed" shared a photo by Mike the Mod that I thought was a striking example of variations over the years.

Just sharing in the spirit of community - photo credit goes to Mike.

jwes 18 August 2011 12:02 PM

Had same issue. I have a black insert for my 16710 and it willnot fit on the watch. The insert is .2mm too thick when compared to my others.
