5167 with 3 different type of Patek Philippe original equipment manufacturer strap such as bracelet, rubber, and crocodile leather strap with pin buckle or Calatrava cross deployant clasp....
 |
All of these watches can IMO if you can deal with the service downtimes. Question is what your lifestyle entails. I would sooner swim/wet a Rolex than most Pateks for example (as long as they're not vintage references). And if I'm going to be digging my hands into hard labor/activities, I'm not exactly sure if a Patek is what I want on my wrist when I go about it. But for 99% of the guys on here working at a desk and getting coffee/food/browsing the malls during the weekends.....any watch will do.

It can handle it but I'd still want one SS Rolex.
Just today my wheels started turning and then I open this thread. The question is which Patek would I go to? |
If they would just stop holding basel and sihh I am positive I could do this.

Yes you can have only 1 Patek :D because you can also have 1 Rolex, 1 AP, 1 JLC as well :)

A 5740/1G my grail piece could be potentially my only Patek if I owned one.

Sure, anything can be a one and only. For me I can’t live without a chrono so I’d stick with my 5960. AC plus chrono, steel, everything I need.
|
Of course you can.

Easily. I wear my aquanaut like it’s a 50 dollar gshock, and while it certainly shows the wear I don’t love it any less. So long as the owner doesn’t mind watching that beautiful bezel shred, rock on my dude.

I needed a bit of time to determine for myself. But I too believe it’s now an easy answer as well. |
Both George Soros & Paul McCartney have been spotted wearing a 5167, and both have the resources & connections to buy whatever they want.
Seems like it’s their “one and only” so that may be a good choice. |

I'm surprised none of the protection film products have been extended to luxury watches yet, which is a CHF20 billion-dollar industry. That's a huge untapped market.

[QUOTE=Russell996;9247973]My one piece would need to be a Grand Comp or Cloisonné or simply spectacular. There is no need to wear a watch for the time so in limiting myself to a single piece it would have to appeal on a level far beyond practicality. This would rule out all sports watches which seems contrary to most.[/QUOTE
I feel the same. Push comes to shove, I need a ‘dress’ watch more than a sports watch. For years, my one and only was a PP AC. A SS sports watch is great to have in a collection, but it couldn’t be my one and only. |

Once you get past the fact that you want a watch for practical purposes and sometimes to complete your usual outfit (90% of people), then you go beyond. At that point, why should you stick with a one and only? If you can afford it I would like to have as many watches at one time that I could practically rotate around.
Most of us are already stuck with 1 woman for life for many good reasons (like loyalty, family, kids, and quite frankly I don't have the mental capacity to juggle 2 women with work and hobbies). On the other hand, watches are simple, easy, they don't get hurt feelings, they don't complain and you can have more than one of them. To me the joy of watch collecting is: 1) Enjoying the aesthetic beauty of watches 2) History, provenance, geekdom 3) Meeting others 4) Trading (yes!) It's like collecting art. Limiting yourself to one to me is a crime of the highest order. As I collect more I get joy in seeing new watches especially vintage timepieces and the stories behind them. To truly experience them fully you need to own them. I feel I channel the energy of the brand, the creator, and imbue it with myself whenever I wear a watch. So yeah, I love my Pateks and intend to hold on to say the 5711 and 3970. But one day, if a 5970 comes along maybe I'll trade up? What if I meet someone who has a double red sea dweller full set in unpolished condition? Would the 5711 get traded if we can agree on value? Perhaps. Sometimes Serendipity is such an amazing thing. Another example, when I'm wearing my limited edition Hodinkee/Hermes collaboration watch, I feel that I am both a collector and a purveyor of the finer things in life. Only 100 pcs were made and I can walk into a Hermes boutique knowing full well they may have never seen one in the flesh. Also gives me street cred among the female executives I deal with that have their Birkins :) It's like each watch is imbued with "emotional" superpowers for its wearer that is different for each person. Again, a crime to limit to one! My 2 cents. |

A lot of well-articulated points in this post with which I agree  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
5164a is easily and one and only. Comfortable, light, travel time, beautiful. And accommodates 5650G blue strap.

It tells the brief story with a couple of pictures of a daily wear nautilus from the 70s. Roughly 40 years as a daily. Father and son both wore it as a daily. Son explained he wears it everyday and regularly chops wood with it on. The owner explained he gets the movement serviced as recommended and does not concern himself with anything else. Personally I wore the 5711 very much when I had it and felt it was suited to everything short of diving and comparable to my sub. My single reservation was the rigid bracelet that I had an admittedly unwarranted fear of crushing. But as far as the movement and durability to daily wear and elements the nautilus is good to go imho. |
