The Official Formula One Thread!

More than once :chuckle:

The 8 entries were whittled down to 4 post-quali.

The race start was ... well, interesting...rolling vs grid box standing start. The software algo's were weighted towards collision detection/avoidance. So fits of confusion and resets.

Scheduled race length was 8 laps, shortened to 7laps. (Good RD decision! :chuckle:) There were no collisions. That was encouraging.

The leader spins - a pass for the lead.

After a Red Flag and more resets, a restart, a pass for the lead on the last lap (which was a bit daring).

And the German team wins. Big drone exhibition and super fireworks show followed.

The Ferrari Cavalcade just had their first event in Nashville this morning. They are in the area a few days before heading to Miami for GP weekend.

Quite the showing headed that way for whoever is there.

Without Max and Newey? I wouldn't bet on that team from 2026.

However, they will still win in 2025, because then Max will be in Newey's car. That's why I don't think it's an option for Max to change in 2025, one year before the new rules/cars. IMO it would be pointless, since then he can not know who will be good from 2026. Therefore, in my opinion, I would bet that they will land with the same team in 2026, with the only difference being that Newey will be there a year earlier. :smokin:

Good read, thanks for sharing!

As for the first day of racing in Miami...
  • Great to see RIC at the pointy end of the sprint race, even though his Sunday start position is awful
  • HUL seems surprisingly powerful this season... maybe his Audi contract has re-lit his fire
  • MAG seems to be taking F1 seriously again, now that it seems his feet are being held to the fire a bit
  • TSU's qualifying results seem to be a bit more consistent than his teammates. That dude needs to mature-up quickly if he wants to stay.
  • LEC definitely has moments of brilliance (evidenced by his best-of-the-rest qualifying), but he has a habit of tumbling down the grid over the course of the race.
  • SAR not qualifying dead last is a surprise! I think his F1 days are over after '24... maybe he gets into IndyCar like Grosjean.

They need to see him holding up the middle finger on Instagram.

In any case at least there’s some excitement!

I’m not sure what to make of quali yesterday but glad Yuki made Q3 and seemed to think the car could do better than he could get from it.

Post some pics when you can! I'm jealous that you're at a race. I hope you get the best Cubano sandwich of your life!

INC 6 May 2024 08:20 AM

Free pit stop for Lando, wrongly sent safety car on the track, trying to help SAR, just so that it is not his fault that he is causing another accident in his home race... while SAI can knock someone else off the track, because it is not a problem. Well, I think the decisions will get weirder race by race. And it's all less and less about racing.

Nevertheless, the competition was interesting and at least not boring. But it wasn't fair, and that's regardless of the fact that Lando deserved a win a long time ago. And maybe that's why it was strange that he couldn't really be happy about it.

piratfisk 6 May 2024 08:24 AM

However Lando got it, he got it! Team Papaya! Happy days for him & a well deserved top step on the podium. Listening to Max complain about understeer made me smile. Shadenfraude, I guess :)

Well….routing for Ferrari but no victory, although a great showing! At least Verstappen finally wasn’t atop the podium.

SAR was hit by MAG. Not SAR's fault.
SAI was penalized.

SC couldn't pick up leader because that was NOR - and NOR entered pitlane.

Just a follow up on why the AM review request was dismissed. There was something new, but wasn't significant enough to re-open the original case.

Document 80
Date: 4 May 2024
Time: 19:20

Petition for the Right of Review

1. On April 23, 2024, the Stewards received a petition from Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team ("Aston Martin" requesting a Right of Review in accordance with Article 14 of the FIA International Sporting Code ("the Code").
2. The request related to the Decisions of the Stewards contained in documents number 40 (Infringement on Car 14 for a breach of Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2d) of the FIA Internation Sporting Code) ("ALO Decision") and number 41 (Final Sprint Classification) from the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix.
3. A hearing was convened at 0800 hrs EST on 3rd May 2024 and the concerned parties were summoned (document numbers 78 to 79).
4. The Stewards of the Chinese Grand Prix conducted the hearing.
5. Attending the hearing were:
On behalf of Aston Martin - Messrs. Mike Krack and Andy Stevenson
On behalf of Scuderia Ferrari ("Ferrari") - Mr Diego Loverno
On behalf of the FIA - Messrs Nikolas Tombazis and Tim Malyon
6. This hearing was to determine, at the sole discretion of the Stewards (as specified in Article
14.3 of the Code), if "a significant and relevant new element is discovered which was unavailable to the parties seeking the review at the time of the decision concerned".
7. Therefore, the Stewards were required to determine if any evidence presented to them was:
a. "significant";
b. "relevant";
c. "new"; and
d. "unavailable" to the party seeking the review at the time of the original decision.
8. Only if that criteria is met, would the Stewards be required to convene a further hearing to reconsider their original decision.

The Test under Article 14.1.1

9. Article 14.1.1 sets a very high bar for reviewing a decision of the Stewards. This has been the consistent position taken in previous requests to exercise the right of review.
Alleged New Element
10. The alleged new element presented was a forward-facing video footage of Car 14 which was unavailable to Aston Martin and the Stewards at the time of the original decision - it was downloaded post the sprint session by F1.
11. While the Stewards had various other footage of the incident from different camera angles, they did not have this footage.
12. In its written submission seeking the review, Aston Martin suggested that the new camera angle showed that the incident in question was a racing incident and not one for which their driver should be penalised.
13. They contended, among other things, that:
a. The new footage was "significant" because it showed "more clearly than any other evidence considered by the Stewards and/or the parties to date, that Car 14 was in a position of the Incident which entitled it to be given room whilst attempting to overtake on the inside of turn 9 pursuant to the Guidelines";
b. The new footage was "relevant" as it showed for the first time the entirety of the incident; and
c. The new footage was "new" as it was not available during the hearing.
14. During the hearing, Aston Martin maintained the above points and sought to convince us that this satisfied the threshold in Article 14.
Our Decision
15. While the footage was undoubtedly "new", as it was unavailable to us during the hearing, there was sufficient footage from other camera angle to give us a clear basis to make the decisions in Documents 40 and 41.
16. The footage would also be "relevant" given that it related specifically to the incident in question.
17. However, even though we did not have this footage at the time we made our decision, we did not consider the footage to be a "significant" new element. The new footage would not have caused us to question our decision or otherwise give us a perspective that we did not already have of the incident.
18. While it showed the incident from a different angle, it added nothing material to the visual perspective that we already had.
19. We accordingly dismissed the petition for review, without the need for us to proceed to the second stage of the review.

I forgot to mention, while attending the Miami Grand Prix, I have never seen a display/plethora of high end watches in one place…ever. These pics were just some of the folks from the box I was in. When walking around the venue, there was what seemed to be, a Rolex, PP, AP, FPJ, etc….on 6 out of every 10 people. (Estimated of course)

Bit of name dropping, I know Andy quite well (although I haven't been in touch for a few years living in Tenerife) He's married to a Baroness who was head of Facebook and Google E+ME & A for few years. Very nice house in West London and one near the AM HQ.

Fair play he started out as a junior mechanic (his dad got him the job there as nepotism is rife in this field) and rose to where he is and tbf stayed there many years. Genuinely nice guy.

anyhoo as you were..
