Couldn't agree with you more Tony. A nice sports watch for sure, but a serious dive watch? Not even close.

It is very subjective, but for me it is a sporty dress watch, maybe for Patek standards it is a sports watch, but for regular watch standards it really isn't, same for the 15202, I mean would anyone here use them the same way they use other sports watches? Don't really think so, but again just my opinion

Tried these two on this evening.
The light was artificial, so not great.
Will take better ones tomorrow in daylight.
Incidentally, the 5196J is brand new and so completely covered in its own see through overcoat 😊😊

Sorry, I have to disagree with you.
The 5711 maybe classed as a sports watch, but imo it is not qualified to be called a divers watch.
Though not as important now, as most divers wear a dive computer. But any divers watch, worth its salt must have a graduated anti clockwise rotating bezel, which can be used to measure the length of a dive.
And for that reason it is not a dive watch.

I sit corrected.

Have you ever heard about humour?

Now that's a couple of nice dress watches! The first Patek I ever purchased was a 5030j. Loved the cushion shape, sold it long ago though and your photo brought back memories.

Tell me about it 😊
That's what making it difficult to choose between them.
I like the size of the 5196 and the clarity. But then again love the different shape of the case it's an automatic and the additional date feature ( which is not overly important, in this case)
What I would like is a 5196 with an automatic movement, especially if it was the 240 😊😊

Lapince, I agree with you completely that it's not really a sports watch in the literal sense, at least the way most of us think of the classic 14080.

But as described on the Patek Philippe website: "the Nautilus has established itself as a classic, elegant sports watch".

I guess it's left to the owner to decide.

That creation would be spectacular, and I'd be lining up to buy one!

Agree that the 240 is a very special movement. I personally prefer automatic watches but dislike how the full rotor obstructs the view. The micro rotor of the 240 solves that problem, and is one of the most reliable movements that Patek has produced.

Lange has an automatic version of their 1815 with a 3/4 rotor that's pretty neat as well.

Well I had 2 and have one coming in, and sure compared to the other Patek it is a sports watch, but not compared to other watches, ROO, RM, Rolex, BP FF, Omega PO or seamaster, the list is long, those are sport watches, really for me the Nautilus models are sporty dress watches, but in no way sport watches, same for the AP Jumbo, they are not made to do real sports with them, I would consider the Aquanaut to be a little more sport watch though slightly and still very far from real sport watches

RUK 3 June 2016 05:29 PM

Having tried the 5196 again the R seems to be the best option for me with size and looks. The other serious option the the JLC MUT Moon a lot of watch for the same price or less

Not really.
Too much hair on display – although to be fair, it is the British way, since it keeps one cozy during the summer. :agree:

A bit too small, like the 5030 – the 5196 looks the best fit.

HUGE fan of the combination of those breguet numbers and those hands. Wonder why doesn't Patek have that combination in the current collection.

But it was a perfect fit for my wrist. So comfortable and just looks like any old watch.
Imo perfectly compliments my SDc.

But surely that defeats the purpose of buying a Patek in the first place, doesn’t it?
There’s plenty of watches that look like “any old watch”, without having to spend Patek money or wondering how long it’ll be gone for a service.

You are quite correct and another classic engage brain before typing :chuckle::thumbs:

Despite my comment it was still the one that gave me the WOW factor

Wow. All fantastic looking watches. My bias picks this.

5196 is superb, the other one would be far nicer if it didn't have the date function, because the font of the date numeral jars against the Breguet indices, IMO.

topcat30093 4 June 2016 07:28 AM

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Good point👍🏻
But for me the winner so far is the 2525/1 followed by the 5196R.
On a slightly non Patek Philippe topic, though linked I saw and tried on my first Laurent Ferrier. It was stunning in RG - sorry forgot to take a photo. Though it was a limited edition (5pieces) and possibly for the UK AD William & Son.

For me, the dress watch had to be simple, thin and elegant so went with the two-handed VC Patrimony Contemporaine.

CLuxlover 5 June 2016 08:21 AM

First off, let me congratulate you on a beautiful current collection. Your current collection is very well varied. I do think a Patek would add a nice addition to your collection. I would go for the 5205.

For me I would not wear a classical dress watch, I would wear one with complications, a 5205 for example, or a funky one like some Vingt 8 models from Voutilainen, but the very classy and classic ones are not for me and never will be I think, never liked them, they are nice but I would look ridiculous with one, normal I try to wear suits as little as possible
