As they now use the p9010 in many 42mm models it may be the case.

Just checked my 1320 which has a clear back and it's definitely thicker then my 1662. I must say though my 661 with the same backing as my 1662(non see through ) wear the same . So the glass back to me makes it thicker |
Someone from the italian forums passionepaneraiwatch.com apparently opened the caseback and took a picture of the movement:

I’ll have to get a watch to compare, but first glance says: - decorations gone (no worries here with solid back) - hacking removed, not just disabled - balance bridge thankfully remains. IMO they simply made a robust movement more so and cut costs along the way. I don’t blame them, but I don’t support the secrecy in which it was deployed. And it absolutely MUST have a new reference number. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Very subtle and livable change In my eyes.

Was the change for the P.9010 to improve profit?
Prices for Panerai watches haven't gone down, so with reduced costs, would increase profit. If that's the motive, seems kinda lame. They'll probably keep increasing watch prices and could have squeezed in another price bump to increase profit vs dumbing down the movement. As for removing the hacking mechanism to improve reliability, also kinda lame since so many other movements hack and are reliable. If Panerai can't achieve that as a manufacturer, that's really weak. |
I'm actually positively surprised they kept the ball bearing for the rotor. I noticed that on newly released movements with micro-rotor something has changed. Instead of the usual ball bearing, we can now see a weird raw-looking, star-shaped screw, e.g. on the perpetual calendar movement (PAM715). The same can be observed on to the PAM1240 Brabus.
