Uncomfortable moment wearing a Rolex

I was in the Sears store the other day doing some Christmas shopping. This particular store is in a not-so-good area of town.

I was paying for my purchase when the other person standing in line behind me was looking VERY CLOSELY at Bluesy, again and again, and not just admiring it to admire it, but (at least in my opinion) verifying what it was and trying to figure out if it was real. As I turned to leave with my son, I looked him straight in the eye and wished him Happy Holidays, but with a look that would hopefully make him question any nefarious ideas he might have had.

I'm not usually paranoid, and have no problem wearing my watch anywhere, but his looks made me more uneasy than usual.

Always be aware of your surroundings.

a good reason to wear long sleeves.

therolexguy 15 December 2009 03:28 AM

I think you did exactly what I would do...look him in the eyes and say something....and of course show him your firearm.

And keep your friends nearby (Mr. Smith & Mr. Wesson).

There is safety in numbers. :chuckle:

maybe the SMP would be a much better choice  :chuckle:

yeah, get what you mean. i always think about where i/we will be going potentially and wear a "suitable" watch for it - rather to be safe than sorry

smallcandle 15 December 2009 03:33 AM

I've had that happen before also. Just look the person right in the eyes and say the first thing that comes to mind. I also take comfort in the thought that my Glock is waiting patiently for me back in my truck should some idiot get "ideas".

Smith, Wesson and their speedy Remington quintuplets stayed in the car - in retrospect I wished they hadn't but I wasn't TOO worried.

Perhaps, the SMP would have been a better choice, but I went there on a whim on the way home, and while I had long sleeves and a heavy coat, it was hot in there, and while waiting in line, I pulled up my sleeves! :banghead:

I know the feeling , I was on the Paris subway one evening and I took the right tram but the wrong direction . By the time I started to realize that , about 10 young guys from the suburbs had come on and stood close to me . I understood fairly rapidly that they had realized that I didn't belong there and were making up the "inventory" of what I was wearing and of course my watch ( SS . Daytona ) I luckily never found out if they knew what the watch was worth as I got off the very next station as there were plenty of CRS ( military style police ) patrolling . Can't remember ever being that happy seeing police .

omg 15 December 2009 03:41 AM

In the not-so-good area of town, I will leave it in the car or put it in my pocket. Those green travel pouch will come handy.

Always good to be aware of your surroundings. People can be scum, no use pretending everyone is nice and then getting taken advantage of.

novae500 15 December 2009 04:08 AM

snowbird 15 December 2009 04:11 AM

The blue sub is a very eye catching watch, usually that's a good thing but sounds like not in this case . . .

A huge CWP +1

Pep04 15 December 2009 06:38 AM

I fail to see how a gun would remedy this situation. If you get robbed, it is usually b some perp holding a gun to you. Any movement you make towards your gun will pompt him to shoot you.

I have never seen the point of carrying a gun. The best thing to do is to not walk back your car alone or right away. And if the worst happens, give him the stupid watch (it is not worth your life), log onto TRF and get a new one from DavidSW or Mosco.

But thats just my opinion.

Gerardus 15 December 2009 07:14 AM

I walked the same way a few years ago on the Beira Mar in Fortaleza/Brasil with a brand new TT datejust.
Which i bought at Schiphol airport before the flight to Brasil.
I felt very uncomfortable how some people looked at me.
Rest of my time there left it in the safe and was walking with a swatch.
(also swiss made hahaha)

david9962000 15 December 2009 07:38 AM

Yeah, I renewed my drivers license last week and I kept mine home.

Truer words are rarely spoken! :read: Looking the person right in the eye is a sign of confidence that will deter most all hostile ideas, good call!

As for the rest of you: I thought the idea of getting jacked for my watch was scarey!?! LOL!!!

I gotta save those pics :chuckle: :dummy:

Some play the victim role better then others. I for one would rather have a carry piece & never need it then one day need it & not have it. There's plenty more to worry about then just a watch getting jacked.

I have close combat training. I am fortunate for that. Being a victim is not something I am afraid of becoming. If you do not, I fail to see how you can impale an assailant if he is pointing a gun against your back or your chest. Even if you have a gun (that is most likely tucked under your shirt or on your ankle in a holster or even worse in a glove compartment or under/between the seat of your car), any movement will worsen the situation.

And a piece of crap that holds you up, is not going to turn and run giving you time to reach for your piece. He is likely to pistol whip you unconscious so you don't follow him or pull your piece.

And God forbid that he finds your gun a takes that too.

Best situation is to not put yourself in that mess. I am not a cop, and while I respect them and have many as friends, they are not going to run to catch the perp that ran off with your gun.

Keep you head on a swivel worked for the flight deck of an aircraft carrier and it works when out in town.

TRF isn't exactly gun friendly so this will be my last reply regarding the subject. Congrats on the self defense class, that's not a suitable sub for a good carry gun in my book though. Maybe I'm just jaded from too many trips to the sandbox but I like to have a defensive tool available should the need arise & hopefully it never will. If I was Steven Segal maybe I wouldn't care as much, lol. :agree:
