Thoughts on a rose gold bracelet versus a leather strap?

Hi folks,

Please share your take on the aesthetics, the style, the wearability, and everything that goes into a gold bracelet on a dress watch versus a strap. It's much appreciated, thanks!

I'm looking at something like this:

Much nicer on a strap in my opinion. The strap presents the watch as the center piece, while the bracelet is a bit overdone.

It's true, when I have a bracelet, a big part of the allure becomes the bracelet itself!

Gold bracelet--doesn't matter the brand=scratches which drive me crazy.

However, if you can can deal with that, bracelet always has a nice pop to it vs strap.

I see why you go RM with space age, scratch-proof materials!

My vote for leather strap but then I'm biased [emoji3]

On strap, a wonderfully executed timepiece.

On bracelet, jewelry.

WhatTheDeuce 25 August 2016 09:28 AM

For a 5146, I'd say strap, but for a Nautilus, I'd say bracelet.

Bracelet for sure. But both are great.

Hollister 25 August 2016 09:44 AM

That bracelet is utterly revolting in my humble Op. I have a 5146G on a strap, a really beautiful watch (slate dial). Would be ruined by that bracelet.

mps354 25 August 2016 10:19 AM

I prefer straps by a wide margin

Golf&Watches 25 August 2016 10:20 AM

Living in a tropical climate makes leather straps unwearable for me. That bracelet looks much better in person than in photographs too.

Strong opinions, gents! Could you please explain some of the whys and wherefores, I would find it helpful, thanks!

Straps on a dress watch with traditional hook lugs, bracelet on a sports.

I'm torn by this question. I just can't find many strap watches that fit me well (centered watch head etc). I love them - buy them - grind over the fit - then flip them. Now for your choice here, I'm not a fan of that particular bracelet. Best option for me is my dd40 - probably as dress as I'll ever need. Could that work for you?

lapince 25 August 2016 11:31 AM

to be honest on this one prefer bracelet, looks cool IMO

jon_jon 25 August 2016 11:38 AM

I think the bracelet adds to the overall dressiness of the watch for a special occasion, although I prefer the leather straps for regular wear

GB-man 25 August 2016 12:55 PM

My preference would be strap for this one.

I just meant that in general I prefer straps to bracelets. I've never really been able to get a perfect fit with any bracelet, much less a year round happy medium given wrist swelling in the warmer months. I even tend to wear sports watches on leather, rubber, or natos, even if they are designed primarily to wear with a bracelet. So in this case, given its a dress watch that in my opinion is more suited toward a leather strap, I'd really have a hard time opting for the bracelet (even though the design itself seems nice)

sgwatch 25 August 2016 01:42 PM

I like the bracelet. It is VERY comfortable.

KarlS 25 August 2016 02:43 PM

a) i am too conservative and probably wouldn't wear a coloured PM bracelet no matter what watch;
b) dress watches traditionally have strap and sports watches bracelet. Whats the point of a sports watch (on strap) if you cant dive in the pool?

Dancing Fire 25 August 2016 03:26 PM

No contest...Strap!

BNA/LION 25 August 2016 03:32 PM

I Like the Gold bracelet, looks rich & classy... Good to mix it up on a leather band too.

jenniferjanef 25 August 2016 05:11 PM

Bracelet for sure! Looks stunning!!

kneedeep 25 August 2016 05:53 PM

Strap.

Hi, totally impossible to justify my opinion, I just think that particular bracelet is a little OTT, and it distracts the eye away from the watch itself.

I think the 5146 is one of the best-looking PPs currently being made, and it looks sensational on a strap without being too flashy and attracting unwanted attention. The 5146 doesn't suffer from the enormo-font PATEK PHILIPPE plastered across the dial, which seems to be a recent and unfortunate PP design trope. The bracelet would kill that subtlety, IMO.

But these are just opinions, and others can and do disagree.

Hollister 25 August 2016 07:35 PM

P.S. here it is with two of its friends:

Moloch 25 August 2016 08:13 PM

Get both if this is your grail. Buy the one with a bracelet and order the leather strap from Patek or somewhere else of your choosing.

benlee 25 August 2016 08:35 PM

Prefer the strap. Much more classy.

Maltie 25 August 2016 08:38 PM

That bracelet and its look is cool and rich.

PJ S 25 August 2016 09:40 PM

With that dial colour, the RG of both the case and bracelet overpower it and dominate the watch.
If they’d offered the grey with the RG, then the contrast would be completely different, and would probably work better.
On that basis, the dark colour of the strap gives equal prominence to both the case and dial.

This!

World time in WG is nice with the bracelet though, can't explain why but when I tried it I liked it.

gummy 25 August 2016 10:22 PM

Outside of the Nautilus family...I prefer Patek on a strap...

enjoythemusic 25 August 2016 10:29 PM

Having both gives options. In fact you might choose to have a few different colored leather straps such as one being black and the other brown/tan. :)

fungo 25 August 2016 11:02 PM

Dress watch looks better with leather strap. More refined imo.

x2

JorgeCCW 25 August 2016 11:17 PM

i think there is kind and a place for a bracelet. Rolex for example its a watch that imho demands a bracelet. Patek has a sport line that you can go crazy with bracelets and/or rubber. But when you have a complicated watch with a bracelet i feel that you are kind of transforming the idea of a classy complicated watch to sport watch.
I am not saying it looks bad, actually its kind of cool but I wouldn't be willing to give up that Patek aura for it.
hope it make sense

cheers

porschedude 26 August 2016 12:27 AM

I think it looks great on the strap, the bracelet would be a little too loud for me but it still looks really nice either way.

I think with the bracelet, then the bracelet itself becomes a big part of the appeal (or not), and that has to be considered.

propedderkustom 28 August 2016 05:31 AM

I think Patek needs to work harder at making a better looking bracelet. It looks like an afterthought compared to everything else it does.
