GMT-Master IIc 116710 - Ceramic Bezel Fallen Out & Lost

I don't believe it...!!! I was in London on Saturday night - looked at my watch and the ceramic bezel insert had just vanished!
I've only had the watch for a very short period of time. Loved the fact that it has the new bezel - and now it's gone! Have just sold SS Daytona - so am now watchless!
I was glad to see that there have been a few cases - as Rolex will now struggle to argue that it was caused by me.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER CASES? THIS IS THE ONLY ROLEX WATCH I'VE READ ABOUT SO FAR, WHERE THE INSERT HAS FALLEN OUT.
I wish I'd taken a picture to share with you. Have now taken into local Rolex AD. What do you think are the chances of it being back before Christmas...???
They haven't been able to tell me if it's covered under the warranty as of yet...but I can't see how they can't cover it.
WILL KEEP YOU POSTED.

Bad news, Was it the whole bezel or just the insert?

The GMT Master 15 December 2009 01:28 AM

I can guarantee that this is exactly as it looks. Only, I wasn't fortunate to witness it falling off!

Gerardus 15 December 2009 01:51 AM

Wtf!

spuds 15 December 2009 01:51 AM

sorry to hear of this friend & i hope Rolex are equally concrened too.

Between this & the 'weak points' of the new clasp perhaps the GMTc isn't quite the workhorse it's prdecessor was?.....

ryanr 15 December 2009 01:52 AM

Just the insert. Unsure if there was anything between bezel & insert. If there was, this is missing too! Keep a look out in "Funky Buddha", club in London! Got to be around the £400 mark at least I guess.

Watch Professor 15 December 2009 01:56 AM

Sorry to hear this. I wonder if Rolex will cover it. I wouldn't be surprised if they say no, as it has to be a maunfacturer's defect.

Carlos98326194 15 December 2009 02:00 AM

Sorry to hear this my friend. Not the first time to see this....
ROLEX should now look into it I believe. Please let us know about the decision of RSC.

dalip 15 December 2009 02:04 AM

that is shocking....not good at all...sorry to hear this...keep us posted

TSts 15 December 2009 02:17 AM

Bummer, sorry to hear that, I hope Rolex takes care of you. I'll let you know if, and when, mine falls out - the I'll play the lottery :joy:

HDHNTER 15 December 2009 02:41 AM

I hope RSC does right by you.

Would have to be the entire bezel. I don't see how that Ceramic insert could be separated from the solid steel bezel.

To the OP: Sorry, buddy, bit of a shocker there. Can't imagine how that could have happened unless you happened to be walking in a very crowded place and accidentally & unknowingly had a very violent brush against someone in the crowd.

Hope it's all sorted out soon enough.

Good luck - JJ

Definitely no untoward contact with anyone / anything! 100% sure of that!
Bezel insert lost. Bezel itself still attached to watch and still turns the full 24 clicks.
Anyone know how insert is (should be) held in place?

JUSTROLEXES 15 December 2009 03:52 AM

:thumbsdowOups that hurts:banghead:, are you the original owner? did you buy it new?
I've never seen it before, could you post some pics

ryanr 15 December 2009 04:12 AM

Found a pic from Sheldonsmith

This is not my watch - but is the same model and looks EXACTLY the same - guaranteed. Gutted I did not take a picture prior to taking it to my A.D.
Regards

Possibly Rolex is relying on an interference fit between the ceramic and steel. I don't know what angles Rolex chose between the two materials in order to have the correct seating pressure. In the products my company produce we seat steel to steel and the tolerance windows are known. Yet since ceramic is not very flexible, if at all, I imagine the seating pressure window is small and the seating pressure would have to be kept by the steel, thus the allowable dimension is critical, and small, to begin with.

With this there are two theories:

1. Was your ceramic insert too small?
2. Is the bezel in which the insert seats and is 'gripped' by, too big?

I'd ask for a new bezel - the complete bezel, not just a new ceramic disc - if your insert seat is too big the ceramic disc will fall out again.

ryanr 15 December 2009 04:30 AM

Thanks
That's very interesting
I'll wait for the RSC to contact me, and will then discuss it further with them
Thanks everyone for your help

Would be very interesting to see a pic of your watch......see what you can do.

Thanks - JJ

Even if you are not covered Rolex warranty you should be covered by UK statutory consumer law. Is it reasonable that the insert fell off...no, so they should fix
or replace.

Wolfgang427 15 December 2009 07:07 AM

Wow, first time I hear of a bezel insert just falling out. :crying: Should be covered under the warranty unless you dinged it up against something really hard I would guess. :read:

lobsterlee 15 December 2009 07:23 AM

Sorry to hear about your loss... I know how gutted you must have felt.

Makes me feel slightly better that my 16700 bezel insert is only going to cost approx £25 fitted from Rolex Bexley while I wait. It came back from ad service with an miniscule scratch (huge to me!) and they claim they could not have done it!!! I know it was not there when I dropped the watch into them... but for sake of £25 i'd rather take her home to rolex...
