sumariner and deep sea

Hey guys!!
Just joined TRF as im about to buy my first rolex. Can't make up my mind between sub and deep sea. Hope you guys can help me, need some of your opinions and personal experiences with these two. Pics wouldn't hurt either (wristshot, dial, clasp etc)

I would suggest that you start by doing some searches on the forum as you will find many, many posts and pictures as well as comparisons of the watches. My short answer: sub is a great daily wear watch. Many have found (including myself) that the Deepsea, while a very cool watch, is too heavy and thick to make for a practical "do anything" watch.

Please:chuckle:
It's cool because it is big and heavy.

Gonna be hard to make your personal decision based on pics and others opinions. Do yourself a favor, get down to your local AD and give them both a test drive. I did so and within a minute or two I knew which one was coming home with me.

Excellent advice. You HAVE to go and try both watches on (and then maybe wait a week or two and return to do the same thing). The Sub is a great choice that, when sized for you, won't make you think twice about buying it. It's a sharp, practical choice. I don't know what your tastes are in wristwear so if you're at all hesitant when it comes to larger/heavier watches, invest some time into really getting YOUR feel for the DeepSea. It's a beast. Good luck with your decision. I know how I felt when I was pulling the trigger on my first (and last) Rolex so I'm happy for you!

Subc... it works for all but the most formal occasions...

Melanotaenia 27 November 2011 03:32 AM

Tried on both, DSSD was too big for me, and too top heavy as an every day watch (I was looking for a work watch)

Ended up getting a SD instead, as it was a little heftier than the Sub, but not too large like the DSSD, so I could still wear everyday.

If you are going to buy new, I would suggest the Sub. After you try both on, unless you have big wrists (or a big guy) the DSSD may feel a bit big.

But that was just my experience; as other have mentioned, you gotta try them on to know for sure!

JMIND 27 November 2011 03:42 PM

I recommend the sub!

Happytime 27 November 2011 03:54 PM

You should try on SubC and DSSD both at AD store. I have them both and I like to wear DSSD in the winter because DSSD is a little heavy in the summer in AZ temperture 115. Enjoy your first Rolex !

First of all, the sub is the all-classic Rolex watch. It has this "prestege" look to it.

The Deep Sea looks like a bloated sub, no pun intended. To me it looks ugly, with all due respect to the people wearing it, and something that never get to my mind. It is too bulky. The glass has a "rounded" feel to it something which combined with effect of being bloated, looks immensely unaesthetic to me.

i would go with the flow. Go for the sub :)

nGage7962 27 November 2011 06:34 PM

Simple. Try both. Buy the one you like. Ignore all other advise.

bayerische 27 November 2011 07:22 PM

Have had both, well now only Sub's. No date and Date, and All I can say from my DSSD experience, it's a heck of a nice watch, but if you have skinny wrists like me, you are most likely not going to find the watch very comfortable.

In the end I thought it was slightly uncomfortable, too big for my size and too heavy.

Happy with the Subs though.

lance3197 27 November 2011 08:38 PM

Thanks guys. I tried on the watches and yes the DSSD wasn't right for me so I'm gonna go for the sub, sits on my wrist perfectly.

goldminer 27 November 2011 08:41 PM

I would also say Submariner, personally speaking I was disappointed with the Deep-Sea.

Disappointed how?

The Sub C is DSSD's Dinghy

I tried on the sub C at Tornneau in NYC a few weeks ago. Really? It feels like a woman's watch after wearing the DSSD. If that's what you want that's what you get. Very comfortable like a bracelet. It's a little DSSD.

tattooedfagin 27 November 2011 10:48 PM

my daily beater is the DSSD but i love my 3 Sub Dates too, everyone's a winner

x2

I tried on a Deep Sea recently and I never thought I'd like it, I loved it. It might be next on the list but the other posters are right, it's not really for everyday.

each to their own but my DSSD gets the bulk of wear, the weight has never been a factor & along with the bracelet it's a very comfy watch

HL65 27 November 2011 11:04 PM

Taste is subjective so get the one that sings to you the most!! I will say if you wear cuffs--the DSSD is a tight fit though...

travisb 28 November 2011 12:48 AM

You've gotta try both on your wrist.

I would not make a decision without doing this first.

davidf 28 November 2011 01:03 AM

Try on the new HULK sub, it's amazing in person.

He already did try them on. Looks like he decided against the Deepsea.

Good choice!

I do luv the other subs, like the sea dweller and deep sea, but I do luv my simple sub date a lot!

From a perspective contrary to most of the replies in this thread, my daily wear since 1985 had been one or the other of my TT Subs. Three months ago I picked up a DSSD. It has taken over as my preference - and by a long shot.

Not a daily wear? I find it more comfortable than the Sub. But, as has been repeated relentlessly, it's nor for everyone.
