First Panerai: PAM90 or PAM88

Hi all,
I'm about to tke the plunge and purchase my first Panerai.
Any advice on the PAM90 Luminor Power Reserve of the PAM88 Luminor GMT?
I already own a Rolex Bi-metal GMTIIc and a Breitling Superocean.
So looking to add Panerai to my collection as an every day watch...
Thanks,
Babolat

they are basically the same watch, with one being a GMT and one having the power reserve function (as well as cosmetic dial differences). also, based on the pix from panerai's Web site, it looks like the 88 has the quick-change strap system and the 90 does not (you can't fully go on the pix, though, as they can be out of date). i have the quick-change system on my 164 and think it's GREAT.

i personally MUCH prefer the 88 over the 90, as i like the hands and silver sub-dial of the 88 quite a bit, and the power reserve indicator on the 90 doesn't do much for me. i also prefer the four lines (two above, two below) on the 88's dial over the three lines (all above) of the 90's.

however, you do have a GMT already, so, maybe you want to diversify?

good luck with the hunt!

I prefer the 88, busy layout that still works well IMHO. But then again I am biased...

i like the symmetry of the 88 but not too keen on the silver sub-dial. The black crocodile strap on the 90 is very beautiful!!

So...a black sub-dial on the 88 with a black crocodile strap :)

well, if you think you might also like to wear a bracelet from time to time, you could pick up the 297 and get the AD to throw in the black croc to sweeten the deal.

88 for me

dgr8dude 22 December 2011 02:20 AM

Depends on your use... GMT vs Power Reserve.... if you dislike the silver subdial on the 088, the 237 is a better choice...

Turkeyboy 22 December 2011 02:32 AM

The 090.............its a no brainer :dummy: The silver sub-dial just doesn't work........the color immediately draws your attention, distracting one from the true beauty of the watch. It would be a much tougher choice if sub-dial wasn't in silver.

Regardless, they're both Panerais so you can't go wrong!!!!!!

This 2 pams caught my eye when i last visited a local AD. Like them both equally same, just wanna make the right choice for my very first panerai. Also within bugdet range cant afford to pay more

297, not quite the answer , but as above , add a strap and your laughing.

nc42acc 22 December 2011 03:44 AM

90 does have quick change strap system on latest models.

sushisummo 22 December 2011 03:52 AM

88

p_mcgee 22 December 2011 04:24 AM

I'd vote for the 90. The 88 is interesting but there's too much happening on the dial for my taste.

Billythekid 22 December 2011 04:26 AM

297 , best of both

Many thanks all. Much appreciated feedback. decisions...decisions...decisions...

I love my 90. Adding new straps is a 20 second ordeal. I love the way I can personalize it. Always get compliments on the watch.

I'd go with the 90. I also liked the 88 and thought about it. But I couldn't help thinking I would get tired of the silver sub dial. Just my opinion. Plus I like the power reserve.

I had same dilemma. Went with 88. Love it

If you travel often go for the 88 unless, the PR indicator is nice to have. My 2¥

I think the answer, to your question, comes after you put each one the wrist. Then you'll answer your own question.
My answer was 88. But the 212 is still on the list.

abunai 28 December 2011 03:48 AM

i was in the same boat a while back and went with the 90. the 88 dial was just too busy for me. but you cant go wrong with either.

BaltimoreBrian 28 December 2011 12:47 PM

I did purchase the 90 and it does have the quick change strap. What year is the one you are looking at?

BaltimoreBrian 28 December 2011 12:58 PM

One more thought to add to the pile...you will find that there are polarized opinions about the Power Reserve Indicator. You go with what you like on the face, you have to be happy with your choice.
