My 1 Week old Panerai no longer working.
Hello last week I purchased a brand new Panerai Radomir Composite Marina Militaire 8 Giorni (Manual Wind).
I used the majority of the day and it was working terrific until I woke up at 9:30 am and see that it has stopped at 5:40 AM; I wind the watch 10 time close it again and nothing (not ticking) wind it another 10 times still nothing. I am on vacation and took it to another Panerai AD and he inspected it and said the spring is broken. The owner of the AD contacted the boutique I got my watch from and said that it's unusual. They offered to send it to the factory (3 hours) and inspect it but they think they are going to close for Summer holidays? In 2 weeks time I'll be back in my home country and will take it to the local Panerai AD and give them my watch to be sent to the factory for repair. Question will Panerai cover this on warranty ? Do you think it would take a longtime ? Did I do something wrong ? This is not my first proper watch and I'm used to automatic watch's although this is a manual wind. I did exactly what the instruction manual said ( 10 turns for one day, 10 more for two days) keep in mind it should work for 8 days and I've winded it once when I got it and suddenly this catastrophe happened. I've never had a watch break this fast or easily once my AP ROO fell and the movement broke( I can understand because it fell on marble); however I never removed my Panerai from my wrist. Just wanted to vent and hear you insight Thank you in advance. |
If you bought it new from an AD, and it's only a week old, they should take it in for repair at no cost to you.
Do you have the warranty papers? That should tell you what their obligation is. |

Sorry to hear this Mohammed,
I hope they get it fixed up for you. I know this doesn't fix the situation but we must remember these things happen. It is not an indication of lack of quality. Mechanical errors like this can and do happen to the best. Best Of Luck! Enjoy the rest of your holiday. |
Are the Manual wind watches more delicate compared to Automatic ? Ie Rolex Daytona, AP R00 ?

"any scratch or loss of color, plating or material; Damage resulting from accidental impacts, inappropriate or abusive use ( on particular shocks, crushing, oxidation etc. Don't think my use is any of of the above. I wind it and it doesn't work. I took it to the ad and he winds it and I hear that it winds but after a few clicks it releases( my best way of explaining) My guess it's a mainspring broken, but I didn't abuse the watch for it to break? ? |
Mohammed....I am sorry that this has happened to your new 339...
if it makes you feel any better, when I bought my 339 a year ago, I got it from my AD and it was literally on my wrist for 12 hours...then back to the service center.. the watch had gained 45 minutes overnight...sent it back and three weeks later it was back...I think Panerai service gives priority to warranty work... these things happen..just a hassle on a new piece... I still love the 339 and I have it on my wrist as I type...good luck! just a photo...I know.. you probably feel like this guy... http://i837.photobucket.com/albums/z...s/23104d80.jpg |
Thank you for your help, not only do I feel better but I also contacted the brand manager in Kuwait and he says for the Middle East there is a professional service centre for the region in United Arab Emarities specially close to Dubai (Jabal Ali). It's owned by the richemont group to carry repairs, servicing up to 80% to what the Panerai HQ can do;He ensures me it might take a while to get because they dont only carry repairs but thoroughly test the watch so it would be delivered working in tip top shape.
I should just bring my warranty and the watch it will be sent to be fixed. It takes a maximum of 3 months (disadvantage) It's the first time he hears about this problem on a 339, usually this is a symptom of a much older watch that needs servicing. |
glad to hear it...except for the wait...and I am sure it will go quicker..
339 should be back on your wrist in no time...and no cost I am sure... in the mean time..shop for a strap! |

one of my combos...not everyone's cup of tea... |
A broken mainspring is an easy fix so they should turn it around quickly under warranty.
|
glad to see they're being so reactive. sorry about the hassle.
|
The broken mainspring is just a initial guess; I hope it's nothing more (major).
Thanks for the response, that's why I like TRF :) |
Sorry to hear this. I hope u have it up and running soon.
|
Thank you

Mohammed,
My personal experiences with Richemont Service have been nothing less than perfect, pleasant and friendly here in Australia. I feel sure the folk over there will be very similar. Whilst the initial disappointment is now, the future will be happy. cheers richard |

I was called by Panerai HQ, they offered to take my watch from me and have it delivered to Milan and have it fixed before July(date of return flight after vacation) I thanked them and said its a nice gesture but I don't want to risk it.
Ill send it through my local AD and have it sent to Dubai PSC. |
NO, a manual wind watch is every bit as reliable as an auto.

thanks for the update... |
Not that I'm doubting the mainspring is broken, but on those 8 day mvts, you might not see the watch actually start to run until you've wound it quite a bit, maybe 30-50 turns of the crown. Heck, even my measly 48 hour PR Sub C often won't start running until 20 turns.

Although is it common for a mainspring to break ? As I initially posted the watch suddenly stopped the next day when I woke up, I'm winding it 10 time nothing, wind it another ten times still nothing. |
Hi Mohammed,
It is not common for any breakage on this movement. My feeling is that this was an occasion where a failure must be considered to be unfortunate. Each movement is tested prior to casing and I feel certain are also tested prior to packing as part of quality control. The offer of Panerai HQ shows they will stand behind their product and your purchase. Perhaps you might reconsider their offer, as the watch isn't currently working and its return has been assured by them to coincide with your return from vacation. The responsibility for the watch would be theirs and at no risk to you. That said I respect your decision. Simply trying to look at your situation from another perspective. I'm also assuming you have another watch to wear whilst on vacation... no point to feel naked, right ;-) cheers richard |
is the watch new but old stock?
