What does "safe queen" mean?

This might seem likevacsilly question but can someone shed some light on this term for me, please. Thanks.

It's a watch that one keeps in a safe for a very long time (if not all the time). :chuckle:

Urban dictionary: "An item, typically something of use or value, that is kept locked away in a safe place so as not to cause devalue to said item."

Too nice/loved/cherished to risk in daily use/wear..

Yep. Likewise in the auto world cars get labeled "trailer queens" if they only get taken out at shows and never really get driven in the real world. IE: no fun.

Not to be confused with "garage queen", which is a car that constantly is in the shop. They used to apply this term to Jaguars, now seems to be used frequently with Lotus.

Ha!!! The definition was so obvious that I didn't think I was right. Thanks guys.

Today a safe queen term is used by some buying a Rolex watch then storing it away hopefully to make a huge profit. Thats the trouble with some today Rolex watches are not bought for wearing and the pleasure of owning one of the finest mechanical watches made today. Some see Rolex watches as little more than ££££$$$$ signs which IMHO is quite sad for the brand.

I've always understood a Garage Queen to be a car that the owner is afraid to take out of their garage because it might get a spec of dust on it.

It has turned out that I do own a Rolex which has become a safe queen.....I had bought it because the price was right(Sub ND-Two Line in 2009)and thought I would trade off with my Pepsi. But I am having trouble taking the Pepsi off so it is BNIB sitting in the Safe Deposit Box.....and I have been offered a sizable profit but I will save it for my son!!!

Btw.....one of my old time friends(40 plus years) works exclusively on Jaguar E-Types and does most types of work on them(Restoration) with the exception of muffler systems, body work and transmissions. It fun tooling around in E-types and we go for drives all the time and the ragtops are really fun in the summertime!!!

similar to Hangar Queen (more time on the ground than in the air) or an automotive Air Queen (more time in the air than on the ground, aka a piece of junk)
