So the time has come to get my first PAM...

Hello, the PAM gods have been appearing in my dreams for the past 2 months and I have finally convinced the wife to get another watch. Although I already have a 16570 and 16610. Everyday PAMs are growing on me everytime I lay my eyes on them. I like the rich history behind these watches. So, given the limited availabilty of funds, here are my choices: 000 or 005 or 380. I like the OP logo. So my question is, are there any big differences among the choices? weight factor? movement? I never felt quite confused on what to choose  I'm sure choosing the straps would be a disaster too:clap:

Sorry if this was asked 1000x already but it would be great to hear fellow trf's opinions. cheers!

Nice! Welcome.

To me, the logo looks best on a Luminor, so, I would focus on the 000 and 005. Can't go wrong with either and I would go for the 005 for the seconds hand, but the zero has a lot of love.

Good luck with the choice!

Between the 0 and the 5 I'd say just take whichever is available when you visit the dealer/ boutique. It's not as though they have several pieces of each model available for you to choose if u know what i mean. ..

Hey there ! You've picked out some nice watches, but if I may, beyond liking the logo what other factors are you basing your decision(s) on?

The 380 is a Radiomir (aka Rad) case and measures in at 45mm. The Rad line also trend to be a little bit more dressy, but that is easily remedied with a strap change. Changing a strap on a Rad is a PITA as compated to the Luminor's.

Both the 000 (aka zero) and the 005 are Luminor cases and both are 44m. The 005 and the 111 are similar to non-enthusiasts, but they are not as I'm sure you know by now ! Luminor cases have the crown guards, too.

They all use different movements with a 56 hour power reserve. Their in-house movements start entering the picture a few $000 more*. Don't let the non-inhouse movements turn you off - they are work-horses.

The weight amongst them will be a push and shove - the 380 may have a display back...don't know?

Of the three, I would recommend the zero. You can't go wrong with this dial design (aka base). It is true Panerai DNA. You can dress the zero up with a gator or dress it down with an ammo strap.

I'd encourage you to see what else Panerai may have that might appeal. There are other examples like the 005 and 111, besides SIHH just wrapped up. If you send me an email I'll send you a digital copy of Panerai's 2013 catalogue.

Some Panerai questions to consider:
  • Is this primarily for work, leisure, both ?
  • Which case design do you prefer ?
  • Do you have a preference to case material ? etc...

If I can help further let me know ! Before I go are you familiar with the 510 it was just released at SIHH. It is speculated that with the introduction of the 510 Panerai will be sunsetting the 111's.

The 510 will have an 8 day in-house power reserve and rumour suggests the 510 will be 10% more than a 111

It's a nice looking watch and you only need to wind once a week

Joe...

Here's a few picks of my 000:

Psmith 6 February 2013 06:11 PM

I would go with the 005
I like to have the seconds subdial

Wristmaster 6 February 2013 07:49 PM

000 for luminor, 210 for radiomir. Perfect!

Legno 6 February 2013 10:04 PM

+1 to Joe's comments.

And assuming the 510 will really replace the 111, the latter would become a collector's item? Wow.

just to say, the logo has only been around since the 1990s, so, to say the 000 is "true DNA" while the 005 isn't, is not exactly accurate, plus old old panerais had the small seconds hand, anyway.

more to the point, i believe one should just get what one likes (small seconds or not), and not worry about so-called "DNA".

the 510 is a good point....the movement will not be time-tested, but, OP stands behind its product. you just have to like the "8 Days" text on the dial.

Hi Cru, I guess what he was trying to say was that Base is Panerai DNA. I don't think he meant to say that the logo Lum is Panerai DNA.

You can't go wrong with either 000 or 005. Do you want a second hand or not?

all 3 are good choices! I would recommend trying them all on to see which one fits your wrist and eyes best and go from there!

000 or 005 gets my vote.

I was in the same situation when I was searching, i ended up with an 005 and I love it!

SeanLandsnaes 7 February 2013 02:38 AM

Definitely stick with a 000 or 005, cant go wrong with either, only difference is the strap color and a sub seconds dial. Good luck!

Rodentman 7 February 2013 03:16 AM

«convinced the wife...»

What is the meaning of this phrase?

mfer 7 February 2013 05:49 AM

000 or consider a 210.

PDCMachine 7 February 2013 06:23 AM

The 005 was my first PAM, but be careful...it's a sickness after getting your first.

You just want more!

QuantumMechanic 7 February 2013 06:30 AM

Let me clarify

Precisely !

If you want seconds get a 005 or 111. The next decision is if you want painted or sandwich dial. If you don't want seconds get a 000.

Which model is the best? Different people different watch. The zero is probably the most complete re-edition (as compared to 5218-201a), 005 balances the re-edition with seconds, 111 is really popular with new clientele. Then there are the 176 & 177 which are the titanium instances of the 111/112. Oh yeah the 112!

...so many choices

thanks for the detailed reply! I will use it as part work part daily wear but def not going to be a beater. I love how they can be casual and dressy at the same time especially changing the straps. I am looking for a clean dial with the logo so im leaning on the 000. I tried on a 111 at the panerai boutique in town and it didn't sing loud enough for me. I prefer to keep it clean and simple. Btw, those are nice pix! I will be going through our trusted sellers here on trf as I have dealt with Davidsw and ocrolexguy/patrick before. Thanks for the replies folks and I shall post the new addition right away!

Glad I could help ! You really can't go wrong with your decision; your approach is bang on...if it doesn't sing, keep moving on.

Particularly with the zero if you do decide to go ahead with the purchase and you find yourself getting bored with it...it will be very easy to move.

Post some pics when you get your watch !

My AD had both 00 and 05 in stock... I opted for the 05 because of the sub dial but you can't go wrong with either.
Good luck!!
