PAM 372, Winding issues

Just sharing and hopefully helping other people with questions, regarding winding of the PAM 372.
I bought mine in April this year, and since day one I never felt sure about when to stop winding. I have other manual winds and its not to much to it. You wind and when the crown can't go more you stop, very simple. But with the PAM 372 is different, you start winding and about 20 turns (180 degrees turns) you start feeling the spring back, but of course for 3 days reserve I knew it wasn't fully wound. So it always was kind of a guess when to stop. I found a thread that stated that they did 90 turns, others say over 200! turns.
Anyway one day I said to myself, well it's a manual wind so when stops it stops so I went ahead and continue winding to find that moment when crown just can't go more. I did that , and I just felt how all the spring disengage/broke and all the wind came back to the starting point. Ouch ! I can't wind no more:dummy:. I sent it to Paneari under warranty on July 8. I hope someone can clarify this for future owners or guys that never fully wind because they fear that something like this might happen.

I felt it, didn't hear anything. Like when the rotor of some automatics (example 7750)

I stop when I feel resistance.

When I had the 372 I always wind till the crown stop... no problem at all in one year wearing the watch

So maybe something was wrong with mine. Don't know, but it kept spinning back at 20 turns. There other people that had similar experience to mine so I am thinking that depends on the production year. Don't know?

I don't know. I bought mine last year in May, but maybe was produced in 2011.

You should know when it is too hard to wind, you would really have to man handle the watch to break the main spring that way. When it was wound all the way did you try and change the time? I know when it has a high amount of tension on the spring it could disengage the crown but that is all I can come up with.

The problem is that with this watch I never felt a stop, it was tense at 20 turns in the same manner that when is at 70. So it always was a guess. As soon as it happen I stop messing with it and sent it to Panerai.
But yeah, maybe the spring disengage the crown.....

Sounds like the mainspring isn't attached to the barrel. Only fix for that is back to Panerai.

That's terrible, sorry to hear it ... at least it happened when it was still under warranty! No worries, it will be back soon enough

I'm also surprised to hear that the P.3000 acts like the 6497/98 where you wind it until the crown doesn't want to move anymore. My 233 has a slip-clutch (for lack of the proper term) which you can hear once you've wound all three barrels. I don't know why I assumed all in-house worked this way... .

Does the 372 have seconds reset?

cger 26 July 2013 05:46 AM

You wind till it stops. Your watch was faulty. You really need to go very hard to purposely break it.
Major bummer, Panerai QA is not what it used to be, they release many watches with the in-house movements having issues.

It doesn't have a second hand. Mate

I really think so, because what I am hearing here is different of what I experience. I am glad that happen so early so the warranty will take care of it.

My bad - I've got 422 on the brain :chuckle: Not that it applies here, but the P.3001 & P.3002 both have seconds reset

mborkow 26 July 2013 06:43 AM

Sorry to hear about your troubles but once it is sorted out you should have a very good movement. I reset my 372 on July 2 and it's only lost ~8 seconds --total-- since then (I try to estimate the seconds by measuring when the minute hand is exactly centered over one of the batons on the dial).

I see, you must be a dedicated winder. Thanks for your condolences,

Damn..sorry to hear.

cger 27 July 2013 08:07 AM

This is definitely weird. I'm positive your watch left QC with a defect. I'm thinking back when I got my first Panerai which was back in 1994, I never ever had an issue with manual wind and owned several of them.
I'm sure this will be an easy fix for them, just bites that you'll have to wait for a while to get it back.
