So what would you do/say if you were sitting on a plane and the guy next to you scratched your watch while fussing with his laptop? Your wrist is clearly in your space.

If he scratched my Rolex???

For clarity, did the individual realize and acknowledge they dinged your watch? How bad is the scratch? Where is the scratch?

If they realized they did it and it was a major ding, I would explain that it is an expensive watch and is going to cost $ to have fixed. Hopefully, they'd be up to pay for the repair.

If they are totally clueless and less inclined to assist in fixing, well, that's what insurance is for I guess.

Watches are made to be worn and yeah that would suck if it was damaged because of someone else's carelessness but stuff happens sometimes.

I would immediately call over a flight attendant, explain what happened, and get the attendant's name for verification of seating (for court). I'd feel out the other passenger about how he will rectify the scratch, and if amenable, collect his insurance info. If he is hostile, tell him and the flight attendant that you are filing suit against the airlines and the individual.

I'd then ask to be re-seated next to a less reckless companion. If they re-seat you, that may be implicit acknowledgement that there was cause for the seat change, further support for your claim.

Remain polite but firm throughout, and write down a chronology of events, date and sign it. See if either the passenger or attendant will co-sign it (probably not but worth a try). Tell them it is for insurance purposes.

If you were wearing any cheap watch I bet it would have made it unscathed...Murphy's law.

If it was an accident I'd let it go; just write it off as one of the hazards of wearing a gold Rolex.

As to the OP Mike my man...Bummer deal but what can you do? I would call him out on it calmly and hopefully he would apologize like a gentleman. Then I would live with it. For me stuff happens and I am sure we all will face for greater problems in life. :thumbsup:

I choose my seat considering my watch will be facing the aisle or the window. Call me crazy but I worry about that. To answer your question, I would do nothing. Accidents happen.

Sounds like a good reason to ONLY sit next to the window on whatever your watch arm is to make sure no one has access? Lol that is a true sign of WIS!!

"Fussing" with his laptop implies some sort of exaggeration of movement on his part. Some amount of carelessness that could have been avoided if he wasn't fussing.

Too many factors here. Did he know he did it? If he realized, how did he react after it happened?

Scratches happen, but this was obviously due to another person. Ideally they should be held responsible but what can someone really do in a situation like this?

If he apologized, I would probably walk away. It also depends on where the scratch is and how bad it is. If he didn't apologize or acted in a rude manner, then I would give him a piece of my mind.

There's worse things that could happen to us, you know that my friend.

Then id tell the guy sitting next to me what happened and hope he would be a gentleman and TRF member.

Regardless of whether he is if the damage is above my $1,000 deductible call my insurance co. and file a claim.

Mike this totally sucks! Any pics? (Hope it isn't too bad). When my wife and I first got married I had to repetitively tell her to stop trying to recklessly hold my hand because often times her ring would come close to scratching my watch. This addiction makes us all crazy!

Well said. Life's too short to start building a legal case because someone clumsily got in your space. This isn't someone rear ending your Q7 at an intersection.

Wow, I'm stumped. Sitting here, now, it's easy to say I'd make an issue, depending on the extent of the damage. Ideally, the person should offer to pay, but that's an opening that can be uncertain, as well. Did they acknowledge what they they did, take responsibility? Did the damage appear to be significant? A deep scratch, on precious metal I presume, what does that cost to buff out? Jeez, what a dilemma.

I would let it go...stuff happens and I'm guessing it was purely accidental or just being careless. It's not like a car crash...

On face value (without knowing the specifics like extent of damage, demeanour etc), I would file it under "character building life experiences" and let it be.

We all know that dings and scratches are part and parcel of wearing our watches and they can happen in the unlikeliest of circumstances. Accidents happen.

I feel for you, Mike, but have to agree with the above, you have to take the rough with the smooth here I think. I'm not sure of exactly what happened but if someone near me started acting erratically first thing I would do is hide away my gold watch.

That bites. Hate to heard that happened, but shake it off. I hope it's not to bad.

Accidents happen in life; if you don't like it, don't go outside. How you react says a lot about the type of person you are.
