Suggestions for 2nd Panerai
Hi guys!
It's that time for me again... 2014 was a good year at work, and it's time to spend some bucks on a new watch! I've had my PAM183 for a little over a year now, and I've really enjoyed it. For the most part, I've been a fan of minimal watches, but now I'm starting to consider something different. Here are some of my thoughts, although I'm very open to change: - I've never had a chrono - I value the GMT function - My wrist can handle a 47mm - I generally can't stomach the Luminor's crown guard, but it looks okay on the left-handers I was wondering if you guys could make suggestions for my second PAM? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts  Thanks! |
I was close to pulling the trigger on a 233 but got a call to see the 587. Ended up taking the 587 home. Sounds like you want something with a complication. Check out the 233. The 524 is also pretty cool in my opinion with a flyback chrono movement.
Good luck! |
317, 526, 580 or 615?

I like the 514. 1940s case (no CG). Date. seconds hand, 47mm. Reasonably priced for a lot of watch IMO.

For someone who's not into CGs, you're in luck as the past year was the year of the 1940 PAM :agree: Beefy lugs and a Rolex-style 8mm crown - what more can you ask for??? Ah yes, complications... . The 1940 represents the rebirth of the 6154 with very simple dials (base). The 47mm 399 was the first and the 587 / 622 (currently) the most wanted. Chances of finding any of those (at list price) is pretty slim... . There is one (...one!) 1940 with complications... serious complications! That's the 516, "Equation of Time" :smokin:Pretty damn impressive and as far as complications go and @ €18K, pretty damn reasonable (for an EOT!) But ok, €18K is probably more than you had in mind... . http://www.panerai.com/images/prodot...0516_Front.png But if we go back in time, back... back... back to the 323! Based on the P.2003, you've got yourself a Radiomir with GMT and 10 (!) days PR  A very nice, symmetrical dial with date at 3, sub-secs at 9 and a radial PR indicator at 6. With some luck, you may be able to land on for ~€9K  http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/a-week-...ir-10-days-gmt http://static1.squarespace.com/stati...pg?format=750w Good luck and enjoy the hunt  |

Congratulations on the 587 — really nice piece! Too bad for me, it's limited to 1000 pieces and very expensive :banghead: |

You know what else is nice? The 45mm PAM572 — 12-3-6-9, sub-seconds, micro rotor. But then they had to ruin it by putting "Automatic" on the dial. Come on! |

The EOT movement in the 516 is really impressive and I really appreciate that kind of watchmaking, but it just isn't the kind of complication that is "useful," if you know what I mean. I'd much rather have a GMT or chrono, that I would actually use, instead of the deviation between mean and apparent solar time :chuckle: With that said, the PAM323 is a hell of a watch! I tried it recently at the OP boutique in Beirut, and it's beautiful. At 47mm, with GMT, date, automatic movement, and 10 PR, it's a lot of watch and certainly high on my list. You know what would be perfect? If Panerai would put the P.2004 movement in a 47mm steel Radiomir case! A RADIOMIR CHRONO MONOPULSANTE 8 DAYS GMT ACCIAIO... hot! |
If you are a fan of the Radiomir style, and can handle 47mm
I recommend the 232, it is in a class by itself and it seems the prices have come down a bit. find one for wearing, not a safe queen. |
