5271P in a bit more detail

A modern Patek that polarises opinions probably more than any other, I felt it deserved a better set of photos following my recent incoming, and why not have a new poll to see whether we have turned any of the naysayers into converts!!

And a library shot of the 5971P predecessor - note the differences (other than the sub-dial positions), stick hour markers on the new model I prefer to the dot markers of the old, I like the black background windows vs black on white of the older model. Also the new model has diamonds on the lug - maybe I slightly prefer the cleaner look of the 5971's lugs.

Irrespective of your view on diamonds, I think the baguettes are extremely well executed on both models.

Beautiful! Congrats on your new acquisitions...very impressive ;-)

conkers 21 August 2016 08:39 PM

Thank you kind sir! Poll is 50/50 so far but early days!

I'll be perfectly honnest, i think there is a little bit too much going on. Getting older makes me think that less is more.

Still a spectacular illustration of what the human genius can achieve.

conkers 21 August 2016 10:01 PM

I need to find a better lens to pick up on the dial which seems to have a little more lustre to it over my 5270. I did some investigating and apparently it has a 12 layer lacquer dial, but not sure what the standard 5270 dials are - I actually enjoy the fact that I am picking things I didn't know about or see when I was considering the purchase.

Diamonds are a ......... beat friend LOL

Until a few months ago I wouldn't even consider diamonds on a watch for men
But in Düsseldorf,Germany I tried exactly the same watch

A zillion times above my budget but at least I could try it
And I must confess that I really liked the watch, more than I could imagine

If I had the choice I would still choose one without diamonds but if I had the budget to own a few like you.... I might as well buy the 5271 too

Let me put it in another way
Most here know I'm a HUGE 5070 lover
If I could afford all 4 of them I would buy them in a heartbeat......and you can be sure in that case I would also go for a 5071

I did not vote because my answer is something between the 2 possibilities....as you can read
Not my first choice but to have "the full set" it's a great piece too

conkers 21 August 2016 10:08 PM

My friendly dealer has a 5071 in, a very interesting piece........

Daytonaman799 21 August 2016 10:12 PM

But they're damn expensive
The 5070p is much cheaper and imo 10 times more interesting

I love it and only could dream of having a 5971 paired with my favorite 5270. Awesome watch and awesome watches!Congrats to you on their acquisition! Enjoy them in the best of health.

AK797 21 August 2016 10:36 PM

I prefer diamonds on the dial than on the bezel because if you are going down that blingy route then diamonds really need good light to lustre and shine exquisitely otherwise they look mostly like glass and that ruins the aesthetic for me, altho if you live in a sunny climate this may not be such an issue.

AJW232 21 August 2016 11:33 PM

I think it needs to be seen in person as pictures don't do it justice, much like many pp references. I've admired it in the window of the London pp salon many a time.

conkers 21 August 2016 11:46 PM

It is a valid point - fortunately in HK and Thailand where I live, sunshine is normally on the agenda!

To be honest, I didn't ask him the price on the 5071!

I have also seen a 5071 dial in a 5070P case, which actually was very interesting - I didn't see the papers, so I don't know if it left the factory like that. As the expert on this model, can you shed any light?

BobDyl 22 August 2016 01:15 AM

Extremely well executed. Thank you for the detail shots. It would be great to see similar macro shots of the other pieces too (a lot of work I realize). I'm always surprised at how weak the Patek.com galleries are...they build the most amazing, detailed products in the world and then present terrible, low resolution photos of them.

andyol1966 22 August 2016 01:51 AM

I'm not normally a fan of diamonds, but the pics are stunning and it kinda works. Would love to see it in the flesh. Thanks for sharing,,,,it really is a thing of beauty that I'm sure anyone can appreciate,,,,even if it doesn't appeal to everyone,,,although to be fair,,,it's probably out of most people's league. It's the sort of piece if I saw on someone's wrist,,I would be full of admiration

GB-man 22 August 2016 02:30 AM

Love it and would wear it.

Yes it has diamonds but everything else is understated black and platinum. Like pairing a bright tie with a conservative suit. Works just fine for the right occasion.

conkers 22 August 2016 09:55 AM

Thanks everyone. Been on my wrist for 48 hours now and loving it. The other half doesn't like it on me but wants to wear it herself. That was a short conversation!

Haha! She would have to pry it off my cold, dead wrist before I gave that watch up!

LitzDoc 22 August 2016 11:10 AM

Usually I don't like diamond on a watch. I think Patek executed this piece very well. I would definitely wear this piece in the right situations.
Thanks for the eye candy. Love it. Wear them all in good health.

What next. Tourbillon or minute repeater?

Cheers!

I voted no, it's a beautiful watch, and certainly well done, but I would never wear it, just not my style, and although I wear a Patek most days, that one is just a bit much for me. Certain people may pull it off better.

I honestly think it's just a cultural thing, in America, at least in a professional environment, blinged out watches are just not worn, even among the Business crowd that all wear Patek and AP, not many diamonds, I think it's more prevelant in other countries, I see you are in Hong Kong, I have noticed, at least in New York, more Asian American businessmen wearing diamond encrusted watches in the boardroom than most anyone else.

conkers 22 August 2016 05:11 PM

The Asia angle is a valid one. In the west these days many people frown at conspicuous displays of wealth not least because of crime increases but in places like HK and Singapore crime is much less of an issue and people are a bit more showy. As a westerner in HK I see both sides of the coin and buying a diamond encrusted watch has been a 20 year journey. One is enough for sure but this is as well executed as I have seen. I never wear any jewellery so this is quite a statement for me! So far only one person in the office asked me if I was a pimp. We will see how it goes.

SearChart 22 August 2016 05:18 PM

Love the look but I think the 5970 and 5270 are just too big. I prefer the smaller 3970.

Fiery 22 August 2016 05:36 PM

I'd love it without diamonds :) Maybe in 2019 we'll get that (5270P with black dial).

Well put. I think this is a very nice watch and the use of the baguettes in the case is exquisite, but as was said earlier about aging eyes, to me less is more. Heck, I even have a time reading my 5726 AC! Kinda sucks that the moment when I can truly afford and enjoy a nice watch, I can't see the darn thing without some magnification.

murcielago_boy 22 August 2016 08:48 PM

As an item of jewelry it is undeniably beautiful. But as a watch to wear, I believe that diamonds actually detract from the elegance of a watch. I could not see myself wearing it for anything other than black tie occasions and at other times, I'd think it quite wildly ostentatious.

Beautiful but less a watch and not for me.
I think it's squarely aimed at the Far East and Middle East consumer.

Congratulations on the purchase and enjoy however you like it! :-)
