First Panerai - 01000?
 

I'm deep in the Panerai research after trying on a few on vacation earlier this week. I don't want to drop a lot on one (at least now), which is just as well because I really only prefer the plainest dial versions. I tried the Duo and a couple of others, including an auto, but I really want a manual wind version.

I originally stumbled across the 00112 online, which seemed pretty perfect, though out of production now and it seems hard to find. So would the 01000 be a decent option in its stead? I guess my question is, of those two, which should I buy based on the long-term (I plan to keep what I acquire).

What I haven't quite deciphered yet is the movement in the 01000.

Yes, I did see that. What I should've done is further researched what OP I calibre is.

Edit: Which I see (assuming this is correct info) is an ETA 6497.

01000 uses Panerai in house calibre.

Work to find the 112 (or 000, 005, 111, 176, 177). much better watches and classic modern Panerai. Bullet proof & easy to service movement and not a snapped in case back and integrated bezel (both huge steps backwards in a supposed effort to keep the "entry level" pieces' prices low) like the 1000 and similar.

I agree with Cru 100%. I was in the same boat and made the effort to find a 000 rather than settle for the 1000. Best choice I could have made, I reckon you'll feel the same way.

The difference between the 000 and the 112 is ... display back? Working on finding the differences now, but wanted to ask as well.

^ No, that's 000 v 112, not 1000.

I'd agree with avoiding the 1000. The minimum water resistant just isn't "Panerai" enough. Better getting an excellent condition preowned.

I'd also consider adding the 0560 to your list of watches to consider. I was thinking about a base PAM of some sort, but I like the fact that it's 8-day (something I don't have in my watch box) and that the dial doesn't have the logo on it.

Like the prior have stated, there are better choices like the 111. Picked this up last month in mint condition. 2010 K series w/ sandwich dial and sapphire backing of the movement. Triple boxed, tool, original two straps in great condition, box, papers, etc. They are out there, you just have to take some time to find it.

This is very interesting, I'm not in position meantime to buy a Panerai but hope to in the future. I didn't realise the 1000 is not highly rated. I love the simplicity of the dial however 111 , 005 etc are also simple dials. Thanks inadvertently for the advice.

The new 01000 uses the same movement as the discontinued 00000. ETA 6497 without the swan neck regulator.
But 100m water resistance, snap off back and different bezel... id go with the 000 anytime. Panerai seriously cheapened the new entry level watches.
