Submersible Advice
 

I am just now getting back into Panerai after having owned a 005 and a 024 a few years back. To get myself re-acquainted, I went out and grabbed a new 8 movement base Radiomir and Luminor. I actually got the Luminor in a white dial (sacriledge I know) because I knew I would be adding a third Panerai in the near future.

Initially I was completely sold on the 305 or 1305. I having seen the 682, I now have a conundrum. I like the 305/1305 partly because I do feel like an Luminor 1950 is best represented at 47mm. Somehow it seems more appropriate. I do not own any titanium pieces and the light weight of the metal has both upsides and drawbacks for me.

The 682 is probably more practical as an everyday diver. I like that it's in steel. I worry that at 42mm, it just won't seem very "Panerai" at that size. My ideal would be a steel Luminor Submersible 1950 case at 44mm, but I am not sure one exists, and if it did, it doesn't have the looks of the 305 or 682.

I know I could always get a 024, but I've been there and done that. I really want something in the 1950 case and with less wobble in the movement. That was one thing that really bothered me about the 024. I'm interested to hear how either piece wears and would of course entertain any photos for perspective. I am in no rush, so I have time to contemplate this choice.

Bro, the only 44mm sub in a 1950s case is the 243. But it has the same movement as the 24/25. I still love the watch itself and would prefer it to a 305. I am ashamed to say I sold mine, but I think it will be repurchased in the future. Really was a big chunk of cool.

I like the 7750's wobble... when it (rarely) happens, if feels like it's "talking" to me. :chuckle: :thumbsup:

But, if you don't like it, don't go back to the 24...or the 243 for that matter (another great choice).

In the 47mm size, I'd go for the 1305, as I think the new thinner case and blue had work well for that submersible.

The 692 is an awesome choice, but I don't know if it's available yet? The BMG tech and blue dial seem really cool.

As for the 682, the design of the sub lends itself well to a smaller size, IMHO. It's probably what I'd go for, but I'd need a side by side with the 1305.

1305 runs thinner than the 305? That's a big factor for me. I like that it would be a wide piece but with a thinner profile. I agree with your thoughts on the blue hand. The subtle touch of color works well. I'm going to have to look at both in person. The 682 just seems so right on so many levels. I'm just worried it won't feel like a PAM.

Have you considered the 389 / 1389, Evan? I was sorely tempted by one earlier this year. It’s titanium, which might not be ideal, but it’s 47mm and a 1950 Luminor Submersible. Not sure it matters but it’s also anti-magnetic. It’s a great piece :cheers:

I'm not anti-titanium in so much as I like a little heft to my watches. I don't own any precious metal pieces yet (:thumbsup:). Then again, at 47mm, titanium probably makes a lot of sense.

I do like the 389/1389. I think the black insert is really attractive. I think I want something a little more "traditional Submersible" in appearance with the plain steel/titanium bezel. What I am finding out quickly is that I probably need to see these in person. The one problem I have with Panerai in ADs is they always seem to have a smattering of random pieces whereas Rolex at least tries to stock ADs with one of each. Like a Rolex case might be half empty, but you can see where each model would go. Every time I have seen Panerai in an AD there's like 8 models out and a few in the windows and that's about it.

I might head up to Short Hills here in NJ, or maybe even the boutique in NYC (I have a wedding in the city in January). I gotta try these on. I might see the 389/1389 in person and want it immediately over the 305/1305.

It’s well worth taking the time to go to a boutique, if there’s one within a reasonable distance. I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you this but very few Panerais hold their value so you need to get it right.

The thing I love about the 389 / 1389 is the ceramic bezel. A bit leftfield of the traditional submersible but more hard wearing (if you’re OCD about scratches like me) :cheers:
