14K Gold Date Just 1980's

2 Attachment(s)
I have a 1980's Model 14K Gold Date Just. I have owned it over 20 years.
Advice on removing my SS# I put on the back years ago. Should I have it buffed off or will a jeweler need to fill and buff to remove the numbers?

It seems to be pretty rare. I realize rare doesn't mean its worth a lot. Great little watch that looks pretty nice.

Thanks for any advice,
David

We are not a valuation site but like any product its only worth what someone will pay.

He didn’t ask for a valuation, he asked for advice on removing an engraved social security number on the case back.

It really depends how deep the engraving is. If it’s shallow, a quick buff will do it. If not, you may need to replace the case back or weld in the engraving and refinish.

I’d get the opinion of Rolliworks or LA Watch Works or someone like that. Ordering a replacement case back will likely be the most expensive option.

Why do you have your SS on your watch

Very very nice watch, send it to Rolliworks.

 thinking the same thing...

I put my PIN on mine. Obvious reasons.

Seems like putting a SS# number on a watch would be totally useless and risky. Initials would have made far more sense if you wanted identifying marks on the watch.

I think that 35+/- years ago, there wasn't as much thought about social security numbers and identity theft as there is today. At that time, it probably made sense - could easily tie the watch to him if anything happened to it. Today it's obviously different.

I agree with the folks above - send it to Rolliworks and have them help you out with it.

Nice looking watch, by the way!

Thanks for the comments.
When I got the watch the jeweler recommended the SS# to prove it was mine.
A different time. Remember we used to have SS# on our checks.
Crazy time wasn’t it. My initials are on the clasp but they are almost worn off.
I got the watch in 1986 so it’s really 30 years of ownership.

You are in luck..

Your caseback is gold and most any jeweler can float gold fill over the back, then flatten the whole thing, although I might find one who specializes in Rolex watches.

They can also chuck it up in a lathe and take off a few microns if it isn't too deep.

I would bet that Rolliworks in San Fran could do the job, give them a call.
