I bought an estate Patek Calatrava on Shopping Channel-Canada

I get ad emails from the shopping channel here in Canada. The shopping channel also sells gold coins from The Royal Mint. I wanted to see what coins were out there in the market. I happened to see that they sell estate jewelry
and the watch that stood out was a Patek Calatrava. It was going for $13260cdn (10k usd). Without thinking twice I bought it right away. The watch looked original and not polished. My first Patek purchase.

I’m hoping it comes with box and papers which the customer service rep said it did.

My fellow PP collectors, just wondering what are your thoughts? Did I make a good decision to buy it right away?

I’d say you’ve well overpaid, even for a vintage Calatrava.
Looking at the dial, it’s not going to be a cheap restoration when you send it in for servicing.

I’m going to leave the dial as is. I will probably won’t wear it. Price is relative to the market and by the looks of what is out there and sold. I will just say I’m happy, even more so with box and Papers.

Congrats! Pretty cool Calatrava! If it makes you happy, it's a great purchase!

Based on quick research, looks like a ref 3410. The dial seems to be in poor condition--wonder if there has been an issue with water/moisture damage or if someone had opened the watch at some point. Otherwise, there's no reason for the dial to be scuffed like that (or maybe the scuff mark is on the glass?). Is the movement ok?

The hands look a little funny. Does anyone else here know if the minute hand is supposed to reach all the way to the edge of the dial where the minute hash-marks are? The minute hand seems a little short compared to other 3410 examples I can find online... Is the hour hand a tad too long, also? Dare I say that they may be replacement hands from another reference?

I'm not sure about value. Maybe this particular reference went up in value recently, but a yellow gold 3410 (made in 1971) sold for 4,375 GBP in 2018 at Sotheby's Lot 90 "Watches" September 25, 2018.

You have a few $thousandCDN to plow back into it. By the time you’re done, you’ll be a tad over market for that model.

Since you’re not going to wear it, what was your goal for this acquisition?

I can’t say you did good, or erred without better pictures.

Did the seller vouch for anything other than “as is”?

I would have passed- poor condition, overpriced, no plans to actually wear and enjoy it, and doubtful appreciation potential .... I would have just taken that money and put it in a mutual fund

So you bought a Patek dress watch, most likely overpaid which would not necessarily matter if you planned to wear the watch, but you are not going to do so. If you are not going to give the watch as a gift, the watch is a horrible investment.

Hmm. Not something I would do. If you are ok with the price, the condition, the source and you don’t intend to wear it, well I hope it appreciates.

Congratulations.

Thanks, everyone.

I have an option to return this piece, which is why I took the jump at this. I'll wear this piece when I need to dress up or at a meeting. Did I overpay for this watch? I'll follow up with you guys when I receive it.

I plan to give this my daughter should I keep this watch.

Classic watch. How big is it?

Yes. Value is subjective, however given you don't plan on wearing the watch value means more to you than it would had you bought it to wear. Seeing something for sale in an unusual place (the shopping channel) doesn't mean it is a good deal. The dial is not in good condition based on the price you paid. I would return this watch if I were you, but if you are comfortable with the amount paid and the condition then that is all that matters at the end of the day!

If it is indeed a ref 3410, it should be 35mm (according to the internet).
