5205G or 5170G

Looking at adding something to the collection and torn between a 5205 with blue face or the 5170 with black.
What does everyone think and what would be the right price for a new piece?
Have a good weekend all!

I do love the 5170... But I'm worried it's not always the most legible of hand/dial combination from the majority of times I've seen pictures. This was unfortunately reinforced a by a good degree in person.

In the end I went full circle and got the 5524

WatchLurv 8 February 2020 10:06 PM

5170G is more expensive.

Dont get the 5205 Blue. It looks black unless you're under direct sunlight or a lamp. Total scam by Stern.

These are two of my favorite strap model pieces in the lineup. How many chronos do you have? I’d go chrono most likely. I do really like the 5205 you’ve mentioned, so much so it’s on my list. Of course my standard answer for this is, skip those for 5170p and call it a day

Maybe you should get your eyes examined.

My eyes are perfectly fine. I have it and it's a scam. It's black most of the time unless you put it under a lamp or you're out on a clear blue sky day.

The 5170G black is a beauty no matter how I look at it while the 5205 series doesn't do much for me. Then again I know I'd never use the chrono function on a PM dress watch. Getting a chrono and not using it feels like getting a watch and not wearing it to me which is why I may never get a dress chrono.

Honestly, I think there is some truth to this, in that the 5205G's blue shades out to black toward the outer periphery, so it's not really a solid or vibrant blue like other Patek blue dials. I thought that was immediately obvious the moment I laid eyes on it "live" at an AD.

That said, it's still a nice dial and I can understand why people like it. I wouldn't consider it a "scam", but rather a deliberate attempt by Patek to offer something that's notably different than a typical blue.

Personally, I opted for the 5205R-001 (opaline white) which I find more classic and timeless (and easier to read, I think).

The good news is that people can get the version they prefer - that's exactly why Patek currently offers 3 dial variations on the 5205.

Problem solved. :dude:

We need to throw out the extremes, WL hates it and Ichi loves it. Cancel them for a more normal distribution on this piece.

There is that option but it may come with the associated wife dissatisfaction issues lol.

Btw I should mention that 5205 wears extremely well for a 6.5 wrist. It’s the most comfortable leather strap patek I’ve ever tried on (more comfy to me that my old 5227 and current 5170p)

If you are not adverse to going grey. You can get BNIB on both those for like 20-30% less than MSRP.

I just saved you some money :)

I think it depends on wrist shape- mine is slightly rounded , 6.75in... I’ve had the 5205 on my wrist several times in anticipation of buying it (it’s my favorite dial layout of the ACs), but it just didn’t feel right , prob bc of the thickness. Felt a bit clunky. So never bought it. On my wrist the 5146 and 5227 wear more comfortably.

I didn't see it live. I purchased it based on pictures I saw on google image and their website. It was nice at the shop when I picked it up. Wasn't so nice for the rest of the time when I found out that the blue accent doesn't come through until you shine a light on it.

I hear you. I’ve got an impossible bony lady wrist and the 5205 was a match in heaven. Would have had the black long ago if I felt it was legible enough. I like the blue now.

subtona 9 February 2020 06:25 AM

5172

Bearxj86 9 February 2020 07:11 AM

5170 has a nicer ass and slimmer
5205 more practical/usable complication but more pot bellied

5205 if more of a daily, 5170 if more for dressy and WIS like louping
Finally I think one comes with deployant and one does not? Might want to think about that too

EdwardC 9 February 2020 11:14 AM

5170G late black dial looks awesome

shafran 9 February 2020 10:01 PM

I love both of those choices.

Probably my two favorite pateks. I have a 5205 1g. It fits well. I found the 5146 too small for me. http://www.fototime.com/0B084E3E564F9C4/medium800.jpg

I’m about to list my 5170G for sale. Looks new have all B+P but it’s white dial. Asking $45K.

I kinda agree with him. I tried one on and it was very black, only blue in certain light/angles. Didn't really like it in person at all.

I am a fan of the 5170G black, think the dial looks amazing.

+1
The Breguet numbers are stunning on black. Its dial is so similar to the gorgeous 5370P, but at less than half the price.

Exactly.

It's more black thank blue.

If you are looking for an in-yer-face BLUE Patek, the 5205G is not the one. But if you value subtlety that is both elegant and contemporary without wanting a sports/Nautilus, then the 5205G is lovely.

No filters and in normal indoor lighting, the 5205G works brilliantly.

Ironically I have ZERO interest in a Nautilus. I may be the only person on the planet who feels that way but it just looks like a dated ugly watch that if it wasn’t a Patek nobody would ever buy. But the great thing about watches is it’s all subjective. I am now trying to see if I can find a new 5170P even though it has been discontinued. Failing that I will do the 5205G

I am with you on the lack of interest in a Nautilus - it seems like a perfectly fine watch, but does not do anything for me personally. I do though like the aquanaut as a relaxed, low profile, but still high end sports watch. I have the 5205G and love it. 5170P also a great choice. Maybe would throw 5524 in for consideration.
