5712A - Does the year matter?
 

Hi All - tried searching first and didn’t see any similar topics; would appreciate everyone’s thoughts/advice.

Came across an opportunity to purchase a used 5172 circa 2009 at a price that’s relatively consistent with the market (ie. No significant discount for age)

Just curious if any thinks the age of the watch should matter both from a longevity , value etc? Or as long as the condition is mint and parts all good - nothing to worry about!

(Note: not really concerned about the differences in dials and seals from the eras of 5712)

It matters in some regards
1) service need
2) market wise it has to be slightly below than average
3) age of the watch matters less when the watch is out of production

None of these tells you that you shouldn’t buy it. Just be aware of it

2009 could still have the geneva seal. In my book that makes it more collectible and therefore more valuable. But the market disagrees with me...

Thank you !!! Has anyone tried polishing the nautilus bracelet by any chance? The watch bezel is pretty good but the bracelet has been “worn”. The seller says it can be polished but never really heard about that being done before.....

The bracelet can be polished just like the case but even if a Patek Service Center does it it will shine slightly different than before in my experience (and compared to any parts you may not have gotten polished).

If you look at preowned pieces often the case or parts of the case shine differently from the bracelet as only parts of the watch had been polished.

I don’t like the seller advise , I wouldn’t be advising people to polish a patek bracelet. Can be done ? You can send it to Patek (NY) or LA Watch Works to do it but that’s the only people I would trust to do it. Regardless of that , if I am doubtful about buying an old watch, priced higher like is a newer watch , an advised to polish it ; I would stay away from it and buy somewhere else ....imho
Remember you buy the seller not the watch

I would look to buy a model pre 2014 when Patek still used screws in the bracelet instead of the current pins. The heavier weight of the screws versus the lightweight pins is noticeable to me in how much better the bracelet drapes and the watch feels in general. The pins make the watch feel and look flimsy to me. Hopefully, Patek will return to screws across the line soon.

Just had the bracelet and case of my 3710 polished. Looks very nice to me. Key is to have it done by someone who knows what they are doing...

When it gets discontinued the first year pre-PP stamp Geneva seal only (2006 I think) will shoot up in value. Unless you can get 2006, I’d buy the best condition one you can find if you love it , ensure full set with box and certificate and don’t worry about year of production.
