The steel calatravas: 5212a vs 6007a
It is clear that both watches are the result of an active effort by PP to get the Nautilus and Aquanaut fans to also buy what PP deems the core of its collection: the calatrava.
Given the hype around steel watches, the material was an easy choice, and so was the size. 40mm doesn’t upset anyone and is a clear move up from the 37mm 5196. So far both watches are fairly similar. But case and dial design do set them apart. The 5212a is more traditional with the stepped lugs and the more complex case and a busy dial with a handwritten font. The 6007a is more sporty: straight lugs, very simple case, easy to read dial and is much more of a hybrid between a sports/casual watch and a dress watch. I could see myself wearing the 6007 with shorts and tshirt as wells as with a blue suit. Not so sure I would wear the 5212 with shorts. Much more of a tradional watch that fits business casual or a suit but not a sporty outfit. So in my opinion the 6007a is the better watch to broaden the PP client base with younger and less traditional clients. A pity they only make 1000 and few if any will go to these younger and newer PP clients... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...05405a91da.jpg Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Congrats Mark! You got 2 of the best Calatrava in the world.
|
Congrats...nice comparison. The 6007a checks a lot of boxes...except availability.

Thanks for the comparison. Both look great but I really like the 5212.

I agree with you that Patek is revamping the Calatrava and I think that was a smart move. Having the courage to change your collection is a risk but it will ensure that your company still exists in 100 years.
Harley Davidson did the same and came out with electric motorcycles, even when the user base really wanted the deep sound the 'normal' bikes make. They came with the 5524G, 5212A and now the 6007A and every time there was a controversy. I mean, it is damned if you do or damned if you don't but they are not afraid of change and in my book, that's what counts Can't wait to see what they come up with next |
Does one wear larger than the other?

Thanks for the comparison ... I like the direction PP seems to be going w the Calatrava line in terms of aesthetic appeal to a younger crowd... I wonder how it will pan out though since few of these will get into the hands of said crowd (6007 being limited and 5212 hard to get). I’m really interested to see what PP comes out with in the fall or 2021 and weather it builds on this trend.

Ooh really, I’m of the complete opposite opinion with the 6007 being more svelte on my wrist. Love them both. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...085be31990.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b652c73615.jpg |
I love the 6006 dial on the 5212 case : )
Always a sucker for stepped lugs |

You know that restaurant you love, right? The one you've been going to for years. The chef has those standard dishes that you keep coming back to enjoy. Still, new items get added on and you try them and some of them are pretty good. Then you go back to the favorites you've been eating for years and you think, yes, that's what really brings me back to this place. I see these new models similarly to the new items on the menu.
Neither generates any excitement for me. I'm not nuts about the step case of the 5212. That kills it for me. The 6007 dial design makes my eyes hurt. I don't know where to start. I'm happy you folks like them. Thanks for loading the pics, too, so I can see them in real life as it were. |

That blue dial one is stunning - of course i’ve never really gotten too excited about the nautilus and have always thought the calatrava and vacheron fifty six were great watches, and this is sort of like a cross between the two.
|
Of the two, the one I like best is the 6006g, good mix of the quirky dial and the simpler case, better movement and white gold. Sad thing they discontinued that one.
|
congrats on both

Would love if they did a 5212 in PM

Very nice - thanks for sharing your thoughts. Yes, it's a pity both are so difficult to source. Many younger customers certainly have the means to purchase at retail, but likely lack the lengthy purchase history needed to secure the pieces
