Wrong replacement crown?

My 16713 from 1992 has been overhauled again but this time they said it needed a new crown as the original could only screw in about 360° instead of the minimum requirement. It was replaced for any additional $300. Now I noticed that it has two dots under the crown. From my research it looks like the original had a line under the crown. It seems I have the wrong crown. Can any of you verify the proper crown markings. On Chrono 24 most of the 16713’s for sale have the line. But I thought my vintage GMT ll was a triplock. What‘s up?

5 digit and earlier GMTs were a twinlock. Can't help on the dots. I think a - is correct?

Acidstain 24 August 2020 06:33 AM

Can’t help on the double dots or line, but 100% a vintage gmt is NOT triplock.

They have put on a new Mono Bloc crown, and not the older wrapped steel version. The 2 dots is usually on the pm full gold models.

Mike sorry to hear you are having difficulties with service parts. You didn't mention if it was sent to RSC or not. Also this is a reminder that it helps to photograph your watch completely before service, so as to document if some thing is out of sorts. The Rolesor twinlock watches had two dots only on small diameter crowns. Small is four mm, The 5 and 6 mm crown would have the underline. I wonder if the correct crown tube is installed? I am not an expert just my guess work. Need vintage watch maker to answer. I was writing this and tools was posting the chart. so see above post.

Mike734 24 August 2020 06:56 AM

The watch was overhauled at Ben Bridge, downtown Seattle. Total cost with the new crown was $1000+. From the chart published, above, it looks like it should have the line and not the two dots unless it’s a smaller diameter crown. I guess I’ll ask the watchmaker if he can verify the proper crown.

faimag 24 August 2020 07:21 AM

It’s the same. Two dots and 1 line are both twinlock and fit the GMT

In my opinion, they have used the wrong size crown.

Look at Larry’s chart - you now have a 4.8 on there. It’ll work but is incorrect in my opinion.

I’d defer to a vintage watchmaker who has the crown size part list for your reference.

I believe the 4.8 mm twinlock in gold has 2 dots. The larger crowns have the long underbar. They are different sizes.

That seems right. I don’t remember what I had before but EVERY 16713 watch I’ve checked on Chrono24 has the line. I’d like a larger crown anyway, if it fits. Easier winding, adjusting, etc...

It sounds like Bas have serviced it, he put double dot crowns on everything. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

You got ripped off, $300 for a 604-8 crown is ridiculous. That is 3 times too much.

Bas
So it is a 6mm crown then? Is it possible the watchmaker used the 4.8mm one, or would that not fit the stem?

Does it matter that the Rolesor monobloc crown has an underbar, and the one for full gold has the 2 dots?

UPDATE

The watchmaker responded that the original was steel and gold with a single bar under the crown. The replacement is solid gold with two dots representing a twin lock. So it seems I have the correct part.

Thanks all.

Mike
Is your watch solid gold or is it TT SS/YG?

I see your good with your update.. Line and two dots are the same, meaning both twinlock crowns although the line was the original version. Guessing they used the two dot as there are no line crowns available for your particular gold model so it would be the correct replacement for it.

Yeah I know - but sometimes people get their references mixed so wanted to confirm it.

I think there is a different 6mm monobloc crown for Rolesor models like your GMT and it has an underbar. Bas may know the final answer but look at the chart Larry’s posted and see the intersection of Rolesor monobloc 6mm.

The solid gold monobloc have 2 dots but the Rolesor has the underbar. I’m sure what you got is adequate but it costs more - and might be considered incorrect at RSC.

No, these days there is no difference anymore. Monobloc means two dots on the gold ones. The older capped ones had the bar/line and they did coexist for a while.

That is indeed the correct part. The steel/gold capped crowns are no longer being produced.

Isn't that what Larry said?
