Say something nice...

…about the Tudor P01.

It is the only current-production sports watch from Rolex or Tudor with a matte submariner dial with painted-on luminous hour markers and red dial text. It has a beautifully brushed case and bezel that screams "useful tool watch" without looking too angular but also without being glittery like a dainty luxury model. In-house movement, 70 hr power reserve. The case is large but ergonomic and hugs the wrist perfectly (granted, not a good fit for people with small wrists). A great bargain for around $4k.

I think everyone got butthurt over the p01 because it wasn't a submariner, but now you have the BB58 blue, yet another sub clone.

You may not like it, but this is what a future classic looks like:

It is both!

There's a guy who leaned into that and intentionally "aged" his p01 with the help of a dial modder and some abrasives:

I tried it on last Feb. The strap is super comfy.

I always liked the matte dial, very familiar to Tudor

But most of all, buyers of this piece are most likely, serious watch enthusiasts

There's at least 5 of us! :dude:

And the butthurt was very real: the pain it inflicted lingers in every hateful comment despite the salve of the BB 58 blue.

I wouldn't let my dog wear that watch, but that's why there's multiple styles out there. I can say a positive thing - if you like it, wear it with pride.

You should reconsider, I think your dog would wear it in good health.

I can't in good conscience encourage you to buy one, but yes it's a very comfy watch despite its larger case.

judson 4 November 2020 07:27 AM

I really like it with the bracelet that someone added.

Agreed, looks even better on the bracelet. IMO, after the Submariner expectations fiasco, Tudor's other mistake was not offering a bracelet:

The P01 that Mr. Enthusiast 'embellished' I think is awesome.
Not something I real have the time or inclination to do, but cool result.
P01's are growing on me, at least something different from The Crown Company.

Exactly, instead of making another sub they made something related but new! I think some people just reflexively hate it because it uses a lot of the submariner design cues, but then does something wildly different and unusual with the case. It's an unapologetically unusual and aggressive design, but that doesn't make it bad.

There's also people who are still butthurt about the never-to-be Tudor Sub reissue instagram fiasco:

Nothing better than red meterfeet. :joy:

I think it looks better on steel bracelet. But saying it’s a future classic is a bold prediction. Kind of like when a commentator states a fifth round draft pick is a future hall of famer. It may happen but does not appear that way from the start.

Geckobros 4 November 2020 07:57 AM

You don't have to worry about getting mugged for it.

Spectre38 4 November 2020 08:00 AM

To be honest, I like it. I tried one on at my AD and almost bought it. I thougt it was really comfortable. Wear what you like.

It is a bold claim for a bold watch. Then again, many "classic" Rolex designs (as well as AP Royal Oaks/ROOs and Patek Nautili) started out being scoffed at and scorned as ugly, overpriced, and/or unpopular, but then slloooowwwwly developed a core group of collectors and enthusiasts who saw its merits while everyone else ignored them until it was unobtanium.

Thuilln 4 November 2020 08:03 AM

The leather strap alone makes it a complete disaster for me, but I couldn’t care less. I’m never going to buy such a thing.

VegasMilgauss 4 November 2020 08:03 AM

It makes other watches look better.

And at the same time a leather strap that would get destroyed if submerged in water...

Rashid.bk 4 November 2020 08:11 AM

Say something nice? No problem, you’re absolutely right about the beautiful dial characteristics. Didn’t actually know about those details as I never got past the exterior.
What’s important is that you like it and enjoy it.
