Do you prefer PAM 104 or PAM 312

It seems Panerai is working very hard to become a "manufacture" company. They already have some interesting all in-house calibers in production, and seem to be slowly weeding out the ETA based calibers. I'm wondering if you, the Panerai fans, care if the movements in your watches are all-in-house, or one of their "tried tested and true" ETA based calibers that they can offer at a more reasonable price?

The reason i'm asking is I was looking at a PAM 312 the other day, and it's a beautiful watch, but it's list price is a fair bit higher than then PAM 104 with similar looks and functionality. Obviously with the PAM 312 you're getting an all in-house movement with a 3 day power reserve, which for many watch enthusiasts is great news, but Panerai has built it's current fanbase out of a reputation for ruggedness, reliability, and relatively reasonable cost.

Would you pay more for a PAM 312? or would you prefer a 104? (or another Marina based watched out of the Contemporary selection?)

What is the different between the 2?

Trurolexer 4 May 2009 04:17 AM

For now, I will go for 312.
But you can't go wrong with 104 of course.
Good luck!!! I smells more Panerai to come in your future...:chuckle::thumbsup:

Mosco 4 May 2009 04:34 AM

312 for me.... But as Heru said, can't go wrong with a 104!

X3, as a 104 owner I can tell you that is beautiful watch

The 312 is a in house movement and the price difference is not a lot, I hope I can get one before the end of the year as right now is very hard to get.

TswaneNguni 4 May 2009 06:11 AM

The 104 was my first PAM.I had many choices at the time, but the 104 stood out as the one to get.I think that says something about it
It also singlehandedly brought to an end ,my own little Rollie empire.Through the 104 my love for Panerai was born...and others followed. My 104 is extremely special to me :cheers:

The 312 is also very nice and thats the problem with PAMs ....there are so many thats nice, that we usually end up with quite a few !!! :chuckle::chuckle::thumbsup:

312 vs 104 ?? The one that tickles your fancy more.Simple !!

I had the same issue when I first got into Pan seriously. I have put my name down for a 312. The price difference in the UK is around £700, so it is a difference but not a crazy difference, what you get for having a 312 instead of the 104 is the in-house. Both the 104 and 312 are excellent choices, I think when you get the chance to try them both on, you will be able to decide what makes your heart beat faster.

Yes, I think going in-house with the movement is a great idea!

tuisquash 4 May 2009 07:55 AM

i like both, i have a 104 and my next will be a 312.

oyster21 4 May 2009 08:33 AM

Like everybody said, can't go wrong with both.

This is my take, I love 312 because of the new in-house movement. Once I wear my 312, it wears somewhat different compared to other base models. It's merely because of its thick case. I even have to switch to further hole on my straps when wearing 312.
My personal opinion, 312 is sexier because there's no date magnifying glass, smaller second hand and the brushed and polished combination on the finishing.

I'd suggest for you to go to the AD and try them both. See which one sings for you.

Please excuse for my poor 312 picture... taken with iPhone.

I'll go for the 312 but I don't are much about the movement. It's the fiddy case that gets my vote.

I like the 312 better but its a very thick piece. it would be a perfect 10 piece only if it was thinner and had domed crystal like the other 1950's.
I guess you can't have a perfect 10 piece..

hflee55 4 May 2009 01:26 PM

312 for me. The fiddy case wins it!

The Second 4 May 2009 03:15 PM

I like the 312 for me, i like the small sub seconds dial and the no cyclops.

I like them both a lot... You can't go wrong...

For me - the older movement is tried and true in thousands of watches. Very accurate and dependable. You can't go wrong...!

Enjoy...

I am with you there. From looking at the specs and pics, it looks thick, but people that reviewed it said it does not wear thick. Yeah right, it is thick anyway you look at it. I need to see one in the flesh before I make a decision.

Go for the 312...new exellent caliber...the 104 have a magnifiing glass witch is not into the real spirit of Panerai!!!

It was put there by the Richmond tobbacco compagny!
