What's the opinion on 40mm PAMs?

Hey all. I'm already thinking about my next watch, and I'm thinking of either another Rolex (GMT IIc or Milgauss) or something else. I like Panerai, but I'm thinking that 44mm might be too big and flashy for me. What's the opinion of the 40mm PAMs? Specifically, I really like the PAM 160 on SS bracelet. Thanks!

hey adam...panerai are know for their 44mm watches..and that one of the reason i bought my pam 88 too...some people may buy the 40mm but 44 is not that big at all...after seeing a lot of big watches around 44 is just right....and the problem i have right now is im having a hard time going back to my 36 and 40mm watches...

I liked it, didnt have to keep it. I think you will be fine with a GMT II C it is an awesome watch and you can get a great price preowned.

If you think you can handle the 44mm, I would recommend a 176 I tried it on in the NYC Boutique last week and it is AWESOME. Very understated due to it being titanium and once you put a black or rubber strap its barely noticeable.

I personally think 40mm is fine on bracelet...not on a strap. 44mm on bracelet is an awkward size to me due to being top heavy...and I have 7 3/4" wrists.

I really have never worn one. I went straight to a 44mm titanium and found it to be pretty much perfect.

One does read a reasonable number of newbies having purchased a 40mm to later go to 44mm.

I personally do not like the 40s compared to 44mm PAMs but that is because i started with 44mm PAMs. Once you acclimate to the 44mm the 40s will seem small.

i don't like it.

What about PAM48? :chuckle:

I owned the PAM 48 first and flipped it. Now I have a 45mm Radiomir and feel the size is perfect. It comes down to the fact that Panerai & it's history are rooted in 44mm+ watch sizes. It's just what they're about. All this said, I really feel that the 40mm just isn't right for a PAM.

Good luck on your search!

The 44mm is right for Panerais. I personally wouldn't go for a 40mm Pam.

44mm is the perfect size for a Panerai, I try a 40mm at my AD it wasn't for me the 44mm looks and feels great!!

In my book - most PAM's are good PAM's even the 40mm.

That being said... I will only own 44 - and I never thought I would or could pull of 47mm - but, I LOVE the size...

I think if you did this as a poll you would find most if not all support is for 44mm... I don't think you will regret it. Hope to see you on here!

I have 6.8 in wrists.
I considered a 40 mm but got the 233 a 44 mm.
Now I look at the 40 mm and just am glad I didn't get it.

If you go 40 mm buy used that way you get a good deal and
if you decide you want 44 you wont lose your butt.

Just try them both on and decide what suits you best!

40mm PAM's do not have good resale, you can find a preowned one for a great price! good luck!

Was once considering 40mm models for my first PAM, fortunately tried them on at AD and 44mm models sealed the deal for me.

I would say, try both 40mm and 44mm at AD and decide for yourself.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'll definitely be sure to try on both sizes if I decide to go down the Panerai route. If Jeremy's got 6.8" wrists and likes the 44mm, I may be fine with them as well, as my wrists are somewhere between 7.25" and 7.5".

The proportions on the 44 & 45mm just seem "right"
I do have a 40mm. I wear it more as my "beater watch". I like it, but it just looks out of proportion. ie the straps look skinny, lugs look a bit too big...
