My first PAM: gravitating towards a Submersible

Hello, WIS crowd!

Not yet a Paneristi myself but I get the feeling that this is about to change soon. Your guidance so far was vital and needed once more.

I’ve been thinking for a while what is better to start with, circled around most of the “my first Panerai” threads, boucing from PAM00111 to PAM00359 to PAM00312 to PAM00352 to PAM00321 to PAM00323 to PAM00510 to PAM01314 to PAM01033 to PAM00944.

I know, that’s a lot of numbers and no pictures. Doesn’t really matter, I’ve finally narrowed it down pretty solid:
- it has to be a SUBMERSIBLE;
- black dial and bezel, with maybe just a touch of color;
- has to have the ceramic bezel:
- date complication is a must;
- size over 44mm, considering my wrist is flat and about 7.5 inches and threads claiming the 42 wears smaller;
- open back would be nice.

Not many candidates left, please add any I’ve missed:

1 - PAM00389 Submersible Amagnetic 3 Days 47mm, titanium, P.9000 calibre
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...71822de654.jpg

2 - PAM01389 Submersible Amagnetic, basically the same watch as the one it replaced except for the new P.9010 caliber, coming with an independently adjustable hour hand, similar to GMT watches (cool to use at least twice a year or when traveling abroad);
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ddd185fa4.webp

Unfortunatelly, both watches come with a closed back so nothing to see there.

Hopefully, you’ve made it this far so thank you for your time and would love to hear your opinion.

Any happy owners of the above watches willing to share some wrist pictures?

Regards,
B.

I prefer the earlier ETA models but if I were to choose either one you posted I would go w the top model.

1389 is way more slimmer than 389. Makes a huge difference. There are several dial modifications on 1389 depending on year of production.

1389 is very nice watch, movement is solid as well. Only issue is that bezel is made out of matte ceramics, not scratch proof at all.

Oh, that’s something to consider. But isn’t the older’s model bezel, the 00389, out of the same type of ceramic?

Not being scratch proof misses at least half of its purpose.

Some I’ve seen to have just one blue element (seconds hand) while others have also 2 written elements blue as well, the official website presenting the latter.

Must say I am more attracted to the first iteration of 01389’s dial. Just a touch of blue. A truly “Less is more” example.

It’s apparently the same matte ceramic bezel insert on both 389 and 1389. It is scratch proof as ceramic is much harder than metal, and if hit it against a metallic surface there will be a metal deposit on the ceramic, which is not a scratch and can be easily removed with hard eraser. Both 389 and 1389 feature soft iron inner case hence closed case backs as well.

The first iteration of the 1389 dial with only the seconds hand in blue also has Luminor Submersible. This was changed circa 2019 when the Submersible line has been introduced, dropping the Luminor from the Submersible models.

Wow! Looks like metal deposit. Thanks!

Indexes and hands is also different in 1389 vs 389.

That PAM 389 is now on my list.

Can’t go wrong with a submersible or any 47mm luminor or radiomir as a first panerai :cheers:

Pulled the trigger on PAM01389 (and a SS Ploprof).

Should be here next week. Will come back with pics.

Congrats. And an Omega Ploprof - awesome watch. You won’t see many of those around. That’s a serious diver.

I like the 1389

Not sure about the comments regarding ceramic being easy to scratch.

Had mine
Since aug20 worn daily.

Scratches?

Both came around the same time so not sure yet which one I like better. Ploprof might be in a slight advantage.

I went to see the 1389 and the 1321 GMT. I do like the submersible more, however I wish it had a cyclops over the date window I understand that feature was present in older models.

I took the plunge and purchased a PAM1209 Azzurre. It’s been on my wrist for about eight months and counting. It’s accumulated lots of miles and even beach duty.

So far, it has lived up to my expectations. It’s comfortable, accurate, useful, and somewhat under the radar. Almost perfect for my everyday needs.

I think I like the diving strap better than the regular black one, mainly because its giant buckle presses against the back of my wrist.

They look great, what size is your wrist? You make that 47mm not even seem huge. Good call on the Ploprof, the picture makes me miss mine that I sold a few years back, such a great watch.

I guess I’m about 20cm in circumferince and rather flat but that PAM is really testing my limits.

As for the Ploprof… I can’t miss the opportunity to brag a little since you brought it: I just reunited the family today.
