Crown & Caliber [Hodinkee] - Do Not Sell To Them

Do not sell to Crown and Caliber / Hodinkee

There might be a lot of people that have had no issues selling to them but I just had two issues in a row and I'm not going to give them a third chance.

1. Sent them a nearly new Panerai (attempted to sell on Watchuseek) and they offered a low price but I accepted. I was going to actually take the Hodinkee store credit.
So I sent it, they got the watch and said not interested and sent it back to me. Okay, I guess they had buyers remorse.

2. Just sent them a mint Rolex Explorer (That now I have to wait to get it back to sell it on here).

They offered me 6k for it and I wanted cash so I sent it to them.

Now they email me and are only offering store credit.

Honestly this mostly just wastes my time which is the worst part. They need to be more honest or conservative with their first quotes.
So now I wait. They do 3-4 day shipping but the processing and emails takes half a week each.

It's slow and painful. I'm really not a fan of the way Crown and Caliber and I guess Hodinkee do buisness.

Really I should have just listed it here instead.

Just a warning to everyone else.

They are probably sitting on a bunch of pieces they overpaid for. Sell it to a trusted seller on here and be done.

Poor form but they’re likely watching cash. Just got another discount email from them but it’s still way off the market prices so I think that’s the nicest way they can say we’ve stopped buying without causing a panic.

You guys are completely right.

Watchflair 4 September 2022 10:18 AM

Yea that’s terrible. Lots of trusted sellers on here they pay quick - typically above Hodinkee prices.

I've always used Watchuseek and Reddit but I'll try to list on this forum when I have the watch back.
I'll give it a shot. I think last time it didn't let me but I have the post count and my account goes back to 2016 so I've been here a little white.

Yes but even without listing you can just contact a trusted seller and sell direct.

Of course you can try to list and handle the sale yourself to the end user to try to get more - sometimes just not worth the hassle though - trusted seller quick and painless.

I just sold two High end watches to DavidSW and the deal went down cleanly. Cash was deposited within a few days.

Thanks for the warning. It’s a crummy situation, but I guess the plus side is you didn’t get scammed and will be able to sell for maybe more anyway. Good luck. I had this happen once with a magnificent guitar amplifier I sent across the country only to have it returned by the shop, and it was very annoying!

swaini3 5 September 2022 12:26 PM

Weird.... on both occasions, they could have just said 'we're not buying thanks'.

Bought from them before.

They said that they did not want to buy without papers but they will sell watches without papers so not sure how that works.

He probably took in a trade against a more expensive (profitable) watch. Watches alone are much harder to sell.

Update:

The watch came in on Monday. I posted this on the 2nd so it took 10 days to get the watch back. I'm going to look for other places to sell.

For some reason I can't sell on the Rolex forums. I have no idea why I can't

You have to pledge to be able to sell here....

Hands90 16 September 2022 03:56 AM

I did not know that.
$30 seems like a small cost but I'll wait to see if a current deal goes through. I have someone that might be buying already.

southtexas 25 January 2023 03:44 AM

Anyone have recent interaction with Crown and Caliber?

After my recent experience I would never consider doing business with them again.

They are very dishonest and Hodinkee should really consider their relationship. I have thought about leaving Hodinkee as a result.

The $30 is not payment you make so that you can sell a watch on TRF.

The $30 is to support TRF and help with the costs to run the forum

Being then allowed to sell on TRF is a bonus.

$30 is peanuts.

Similar thing happened with me.

Offered me a decent trade for an old Tag Grand Carrera I had. They sent it back saying that they were not interested.

Then traded it into Jomashop - super professional and great experience.

rolexlovernyc 24 January 2024 04:51 PM

100% agree.
I sent them one watch and they said they only take store credit and gaslighted me into thinking that’s all they promised from the start (it was a cash offer).
Then I tried once more and sent a watch that they didn’t accept because it “needs a service” (immediately sold it to another dealer who accepted it immediately).
I think their algorithm is so odd/unstable when it comes to generating prices, or it’s just rampant disorganization. But if you do send them your watch, set your expectations low.
