Push pins on newer Submersibles
I just got a 979 and I’m a little dumbfounded by the type of push pins Panerai has put on these watches. They have no edges and are literally just a cylinder with the smooth push pins. One, the only way to remove them is by pushing through the hole on the lug, which does not allow you to prevent any damages to the rear of the lug/inside the lug as the pin is coming out. Two, since the freaking thing is so thick, it is not compatible with other Panerai straps that already have a tube in them. WTF…
Am I the only one confused here? |
the tool separates into 2. one for pressing on the button and the other to push the spring bar on the side. you have to press and hold for both.

I’m not familiar with this style of pin. It looks as though Bert is though.
We’re there any instructions that came with the watch? |
Maybe there is something different with the pins because the 979 is a Carbotech model?
I don’t think it has a the quick strap change buttons on the underside of the lugs, so I’m not surprised it didn’t come with the two-piece tool Bert shows above…. (Setting aside this question, the 979 looks really cool. Congrats!) |

^ maybe because they can’t have the pin “screw in” into the carbo tech material? Sorry, I don’t know for sure. Hope this doesn’t take too much enjoyment away from the new watch.

maybe you have to be careful with these materials.
i know the BMG tech case cracks or whatever panerai calls these materials. be aware |
Congrats on the 979! It’s probably my most comfortable watch. I love it. OK, yes it is simple use of lug holes. I use a pin to push through the hole, pushing the lug out. No scratches. Easy. Secure. And they are nice sturdy spring bars.
As for why no locking system like in other models ; not sure but I’ve heard not used with carbotech. I could argue less can go wrong with simple shoulderless spring bars and lug holes. |
Got the same push pins for my 1312. Work as a charm without scratching the timepiece. No complains whatsoever

The 979 uses shoulderless spring bars. They are not meant to be used with tubes in the straps. You remove it like any spring bar with drilled lugs.

Because with drilled lugs you don’t need shoulders and this way you don’t need tubes either as the larger diameter bars fill up that space. It’s a pretty ideal setup for this watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
