Broken BMG Panerai
Not my watch but was at my AD today and a customer brought this in. He said that he only opened the crown guard and it broke in half. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...9cea9357b1.jpg
Wow! Is all I can say! Life is short buy the watch. |
How did it even happened? I thought the case was one solid piece.
|
Oh man, also curious how something like that could've happened. Hopefully they'll have it back to him good as new soon.
In his shoes, however, it would be difficult for me to really appreciate the watch after opening the crown guard and having this happen. |
BMG is as brittle as ceramic and probably a flop material for watches specially tool watches. BMG failures is well documented and will be covered under warranty. I would probably avoid BMG material from any manufacturer.

Broken BMG Panerai
BMG is relatively new and those who have had problems point out they are catastrophic ones.
Watchuseek photo from 6 yrs. ago https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0ea0c0afd5.png Lug explosion. The report rate of these do depend largely on when/where they happen. If you are in the water, it could mean the complete loss of the watch. Those might get chalked up to a different cause. Composition analysis would be worth a look. But who wants to have a watch that could suffer this fate for no good reason? What I mean is the material doesn't solve any problems we have in watch cases. 904, titanium and/or gold/Pt. makes more sense. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Wow. I’ve heard BMG is brittle and can crack. Perhaps the watch had been dropped or bumped already and all it took was a slight torque opening the crown guard to fall apart entirely.
I worry about carbotech although that seems to be holding up well. |
Yikes … I think I’ll stick with SS
|
Wow! First I've seen like that.
|
I guess that something happened like a bump or a drop. But all I can say is WOW
|
Much to be learned on this one. The biggest one for me is don't buy something like this.
|
Thought about buying panerai BMG many times but I never will
|
No risk no fun...therefore i wear a ceramic Pam:chuckle:
|
I’d be interested to know more about what happened.

All of these marketing hyped strange materials are more a gimmick than utilitarian.
They solve a problem nobody really had. |
Carbotech solves weight and brittle issue all while being rather tough to scratch. It’s also why Carbotech is the material Panerai continues to use for their high-end pieces. There’s no downside to this material from my personal experience so far and as good as it gets for a black luxury watch material as it doesn’t seem to age or change color with time or sun exposure. Just had a routine service done on my Carbotech and no polishing required.

There's so many carbon fibre watches and worst is forged carbon fibres like AP uses which end up like a dog chewed it up after years,
However the technology in carbotech is state of the art and I think even RM uses similar peek tech. I love my 1661 |
I think the carbotech is cool but for me titanium seems to give the best combo of weight, corrosion resistance, and durability. You just don’t see Ti watches with dents in them or lugs cracking off, at least I haven’t heard of it. We all like what we like, there is no right answer.

thanks for sharing, special materials make me anxious, I prefer "the good old" steel or gold...

Unlike when I wear one of my precious metal Rolex's where I'm hyper conscious of how soft and vulnerable the material is and am constantly petrified of the slightest knock. https://i.imgur.com/YKaASie.jpg |
UPDATE! I asked the ad yesterday what was going on with this piece. He shared with me that Panerai was replacing the entire watch with a new one. Covered it under warranty too. That impressed me! And I’m happy for the client.
Life is short buy the watch. |
