Rolex DayDate WG 40 vs AP Royal Oak 41
I know it is a Rolex section but it wouldn't hurt to ask. I am choosing between Rolex 228239 DayDate President WG 40 slate dial full set VS AP Royal Oak 15500ST. Both are around the same price.
What would you go for and why? I know what I want but just wanted to see what would watch enthusiasts choose  |
Would depend on what else I had in the collection. If a one and only….DD

In that scenario I'd personally go DD, and round out what I consider a pretty perfect Rolex 4some. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |
I voted AP based on personal preference but it depends on how that DD configuration came about....was it a configuration that's on the top of your list or was it just what you were offered?
If it is the one you were after, then I would go DD. |
The dial of the 15500 is too empty. I’m currently looking for a 26240 and then I’ll move the 15500. Too much space there.
So DayDate for me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I could maybe consider a Jumbo over this DD (I would rather a version with the deconstructed Romans), but in this comparison, the DD without a seconds hesitation.
Good luck with your choice. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cbd0afe508.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...95e9b41136.jpg |
The DD hands down for me. A robust and classic watch.
|
PM DD would trump this SS RO for me.
|
Both lovely watches, I don’t think you could go wrong with either.
They are very different aesthetically, and also gold vs steel, so I would think you would know which one is going to do it more for your own taste. Given you already have a fair few Rolex I’m going to go against the general consensus and say go with the AP. Datejust a bit old man vibe, AP a bit sharper and different from what you have, and in theory in the watch world, on another level. If I seen either in the wild, I’d big respect them both. |
always DD

The DD, especially if they are around the same price.

I’m not a fan of the DD due to a lack of micro adjustment but I would rather have a DD than a 41mmAPRO. I had the black 15400ST for 8 years and it needed service due to poor time keeping three times in that period. If it was 15202/16202 vs Day Date I might reconsider the AP, but the 41mm RO looks tough but it’s kinda fragile.
|
SS RO. Especially since I’m not particularly a fan of the WG DDs
|
DD in this case but 36mm, I'm not personally a fan of the newer (larger RO's). It would be tougher if compared to a 15300/15202 but would still go DD.

Thank you all for the comments. Sorry to break it to you but I don't have the "I got the call" moment this time :)
Both watches under consideration are preowned / mint from open market. Both are close in pricing for the models I am looking at. Will let you all know what I ended up getting including pictures very soon. |
Finally received it. My first PM and first DayDate. Went gray for a full set and over 30% less than current retail. I liked the rhodium striped dial and its understated look. And the heft is real. Couldn’t be happier [emoji4]Happy Friday all!!!
