What mechanical watch would you use for hiking through the jungle?

Going to goto the Amazon rainforest for an extended period, not sure exactly when exactly but should be able to organise it for early next year.

What (automatic) watch would you wear? :)

winst 3 June 2025 07:29 AM

Tudor BB Pro - Black Dial on a black Vanguard strap.

What are your options Jay? Or, we’re you thinking of buying a watch for this trip?

+1. Might consider putting such on a RubberB situation.

Ichiran 3 June 2025 10:01 AM

I will take a solar powered G Shock.

omar-rye 3 June 2025 11:53 AM

I usually wear the 2254 when I’m out in the bush, so I’d pick that.

Whatever you wear, make sure you are OK with marking it up a bit- the bracelet, clasp. lugs, bezel (potentially), even the crystal. Branches snap back, there may be more than one encounter with tree limbs, branches, rocks, the ground.

Also, your wrist may (will) swell more than it usually does both due to the heat/humidity & the altitude, so you might want to consider going with a NATO strap if you aren't wearing a bracelet with an EZ-link or similarly adjustable clasp. (You might want to throw an extra spring-bar or two in your dopp kit (jic).)

For me, Explorer II or a 6-digit Sub would fit the bill just fine.

I had on an IWC when a hike turned into a climb in Norway. I slipped and the watch scratched along a rock face which resulted in me getting a new case. I am still wearing that watch when I go hiking in my neck of the woods but I would not wear anything nicer unless you don't mind the watch getting banged up in a big way.

Back to Casio!

I like the basic 5600 series.

Good question Brian, I would be making a new purchase :)

As someone else has said above I think a green strap, maybe nato although I have never tried one before, will be cool.

I was looking at the Hamilton khaki potentially… I know it’s totally unnecessary but we’re all the same right :chuckle:

:chuckle::thumbsup:

A field watch would be a great choice! I tried on an Exp 40 a bit ago and really thought it was quite nice … 7” flat shaped wrist for your reference:cheers:

If it isn’t destroyed I will be disappointed :)

Some version of a G-Shock.

enjoythemusic 3 June 2025 11:11 PM

Something 100m wp or higher, with crown guards.

A Breitling Emergency II and/or sat phone as well.

subtona 3 June 2025 11:30 PM

Look no further than the Explorer II, it is the perfect adventure watch.

Twinlock Crown is supremely protected
Can function as a compass.

Get one with lugholes for easy strap changes.

Enjoy the trip. Be sure to share pics and the experience.

For me it would be the humble CWC. I built our house wearing one and it's practically bomb proof.

If they're good enough for the UK forces, then they'll be up to the task for your needs.

Always liked that watch :thumbsup::thumbsup:

And pre coaxial :)

JSolution 4 June 2025 06:24 AM

Thanks for the suggestions guys. It won’t be a Rolex for this journey though, I have plenty and I can’t spend a few k just for something to trash haha.

I’m really having fun with cheaper watches at the moment, it’s a side of watch collecting I have never explored before now. The CWC someone suggested earlier looks like a good watch for the job.

I’m traveling through some dangerous parts of the jungle, whilst I have an explorer ii and truth be told I’ve never worn it, I don’t want my arm ripped off by some guerrilla army ha.

I saw the breitling pro is quite cheap to buy, anyone own one? What is definite, is that I want a green strap :)

I like this Dan, this is the kind of watch I am looking for :)

cascavel 4 June 2025 08:11 PM

I hear that anacondas and caiman have a taste for Rolexes so I'd pick something else. Can electric eels magnetize a watch?

77T 4 June 2025 09:29 PM

What mechanical watch would you use for hiking through the jungle?

Marathon or Ball - the jungle setting for long periods of time doesn't bode well for luminova. Self-contained tritium gas tubes make more sense.

Not enough light if you're under the canopy to recharge methinks.

Thanks, Jay!

Tegement steel to resist scratches, 200m WR, simple timer bi-directional rotating bezel, 12 hour chronograph, 2nd time zone, extremely legible in low light situations, Faraday cage encased movement, and many other great Sinn innovations.

Wear it on the super comfortable Erika Original MN strap and you're ready to tackle anything. The sad news is this particular 757 UTC has been discontinued. However, Sinn has many other capable alternative references available for anyone's needs.:read:
