Collection advice

Hi everyone,

I would appreciate some collection advice. I will attach a picture of my current collection but so people know references it is as follows:

Rolex Daytona 116500ln
Rolex BLNR
Rolex Day Date 40, 228238
JLC reverso ultra thin duo face GMT (21st birthday present)
Patek 5205g-013
AP Royal Oak 15450st

I am waiting to collect a Patek 5167a from my AD next. Every watch has been bought at retail.

My question is after the addition of the 5167a, I’m not sure where I want my collection to go. I am tempted to consolidate. 5740, Lange 1815 chrono and fp journe chronometre bleu all appeal to me.

Any opinions on what you would do? Or is it better to have a larger, well rounded collection than to consolidate. On paper I really am happy with my collection. I just feel the AP and Patek are above the rest, and sometimes wonder is quality better than quantity.

Many thanks

That's is a wonderful collection, and I'm not sure you need to add much to it.

Also, I think your question is one that is better suited to the PP or AP side of the forum.

Great collection. I would sit back and enjoy the watches I owned for a minute and see where I go. Something will get your fancy but I would be hard pressed to break the collection up as you have so many great references.

Agreed !Great collection!! You will know when a beauty comes along!

MILGAUSS88 27 June 2025 09:57 PM

Well the FPJ, you will not be able to buy at retail, if that affects your opinion.

brandrea 27 June 2025 10:06 PM

About all you need is a diver :agree:

Agreed...but really, that collection is just about as close to perfect as is. Well done, sir.

My collection has grown and shrunk several times over the last few years. I am in the process now of trying to add back a couple of watches which I regret moving on too hastily in my own attempts to consolidate, thinking that I would be happier with a small and meaningful collection.

Whilst I think I will ultimately end up with a smaller collection further down the line, what I’ve come to learn is that right now, I enjoy the variety of a medium sized collection of around 7 watches.

I’d suggest adding the watches on your wish-list first if possible, the re-assessing once you have all in hand. You could quite easily rotate 4 watches at a time to keeps things fresh. You have a great collection to enjoy in the meantime.

travisb 28 June 2025 02:31 AM

That's a great collection as is.
I'd wait until something grabs your attention rather than searching for a possible next.
Or, as Brian said, a diver always fits in any collection.

BIGMAC142 28 June 2025 03:28 AM

This is an amazing well thought out collection. Personally I wouldn’t really add anymore and go to a one in one out mentality. I’m a believer in less is more if it’s really special to you. Then just wear and enjoy it more. I never want to feel obligated to wear a watch I like because it’s not getting wrist time when I’d truly rather be wearing another watch..if that makes sense.

Quality is always better than quantity. If you wait long enough your collection will tell you what it wants.

Having consolidated too many times, the best advice is do not do it. Keep what you have and add when you can.

Great collection and impressive all at retail.

I honestly think your collection is not lacking ANYTHING. BUT, consolidation of existing/add of 1-2 references from independents that really speak to your heart would be the direction I would look next on your journey.

Superb! Thanks for sharing and the only thing I can think of is a diver of some sort. Be it a Submariner or maybe a Fifty Fathoms or a Submersible. Again, fantastic collection.

Great collection!
FPJ????

I’d get one of these and then rest for a while.

You’ve got a killer collection already! With the 5167A coming in, you’ve covered sport, dress, and iconic pieces well. If you’re eyeing the 5740 or Lange 1815, consolidating for one ultra-high-end piece could make sense. But honestly, if you’re happy with what you’ve got, no need to rush, enjoy the journey.

That's a rather interesting take, I can't say I've heard that many people talk about what they did after consolidating.

I have sold a few watches here and there to amass funds for other purchases but I tend to enjoy holding on to a good collection. There's something about figuring out how your next watch will fit within what you currently own before deciding whether to buy it or not.

For the sake of argument, if I were to sell all you have for one watch between the three you have mentioned, I'd go for the 1815. Otherwise, I wouldn't go out of my way to shop for the next thing but I'd keep both my mind and one eye open.

Ichiran 28 June 2025 11:17 AM

This is a brilliant collection after the 5167a. I will just call it a day and enjoy them.

Easy E 28 June 2025 01:18 PM

Just add. RG VC 4520, or YG VC222

unknown 28 June 2025 05:23 PM

a classic Breguet would fit that collection, but pay way under retail

The Journe CB is by far the best but this will probably be impossible at retail, you'll have to pay list X2 I'm afraid

ChetBaker 28 June 2025 07:57 PM

You need a Vacheron to complete the Holy Trinity. I recommend a cornes de vache.

cascavel 28 June 2025 08:32 PM

Trade out the Patek 5205 and the JLC towards a Lange 1815 Chrono. Forget the Journe CB, it's a beautiful watch but there are other independent brand 3 had watches and something will come along.

enjoythemusic 28 June 2025 09:07 PM

Looks like you're assembling the popular kids in school. You're missing the Patek 5712 and Rolex Sub ND.

It is a very personal thing if people prefer quantity or quality and not just in watches. Some people are collecting in the true sense of the word and are happy with lots of assets, others are rather enthusiasts I guess. Personally I don't want more than 3 to 5 watches max.

In theory a 5740 and the Daytona would make a great two watch collection. In order to get there you'd have to sell off everything else including the incoming 5167 and possibly contribute some cash as well. You should also be comfortable running around with a 200k watch all the time. Sounds good?

ansharma 28 June 2025 10:23 PM

Thats a wonderful collection- congrats and enjoy in the best of health! I think you could add something a little different, here some suggestions which I have in my own collection except the Laine.

My collection strategy is simple….keep collecting and adding otherwise what kind of watch collector would I be?! 35 watches and counting [emoji1787]

Time to make a plan to add a Laine…

Great collection for certain. I would lean towards an independent/microbrand. FPJ is great but that FPJ CB seems to be priced in stupid land on the secondary market. Many of the independents are also priced similarly these days so be careful about the value.

FromDRCtoPP 29 June 2025 03:34 AM

Very nice little collection well done (sharing with you the 5205G-013 and 5157A on the way). I would definitely add a ALS (1815 Chronograph great choice I’ve it as well but many nice Lange 1 models if that’s what you prefer)?
