Morocco Travel
Anyone have experience with traveling to Morocco with a watch on the wrist throughout?
I will not be getting too deep into the country, just Marrakech and a few possible nearby side trips. I was considering bringing a Sub. Thanks! |
Morocco is generally safe for travelers. We were in Istanbul in Aug 2023 with my 12 BLRO.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...030f60b4f0.jpg

I would, but people on the forum would call me crazy. Dozens and dozens of countries with Rolex on my wrist, still don't feel crazy. One day I'll sit down and count them all.

Just spent a month in Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Gibraltar and Portugal, 38 cities in all, and Rolex never came off my wrist or wife’s |
I’ll be taking my AP Diver to Morocco later this month.

Istanbul in Morocco ? [emoji848] |

You’re funny?! Istanbul is in Turkey. My point was Morocco is safe as well as Istanbul, Turkey. Muslim countries are generally safe to travel therefore you can wear your watch even in the summer time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

As I said I’d like to count the total countries. What I can’t count though would be the number of other Rolex watches I spotted while out and about. As Rick Steves once said “fear is for people that don’t get out much.” |
Rick Steves also said to never travel with expensive jewelry. If you dont have insurance I wouldn't do it!
|
“…generally safe…”
|
As long as you feel safe wearing it, that’s all that matters.
Enjoy the trip:cheers: |
Wore my Explorer all round Marrakesh day/night and into the Atlas Mountains and lived to tell the tale with my watch intact.

Just like anywhere; situational awareness is your friend. |
Out of interest has anyone done Barcelona trouble free with an expensive watch on here?
|
In general, it's a wonderful place.
My wife just returned from a ten day stay. Very safe, no concerns, and great people/culture. I find the Middle East, in general, to be much safer than just about anywhere. Anything near the Algerian border can be sketchy, in full disclosure. Good luck and have a great trip.

As with anywhere, awareness of surroundings. Never alone. BTW, once until 4 am at a club. Again, not alone. We were a group. |

The crime index was 49.07 in 2022, indicating a moderate level of crime. While violent crime is relatively low, petty theft and pickpocketing are common, particularly in tourist areas. Travelers should be aware of their surroundings and take precautions to avoid theft, especially in crowded areas and at night.

I would think your wallet in a busy spot in Casablanca is more at risk than a watch on your wrist.

However I still wouldn't wear something flash especially if on show. |
Morocco is generally safe for tourists. If you're concerned, you could consider wearing a less flashy watch.
|
Good luck OP

Never experienced trouble myself. I’m not naive and never scared but maintain a high awareness. Stumbling around intoxicated after dark is not a good idea. |
Enjoy your trip and enjoy your timepiece!!

I've been there twice, always bare wrist.
If you go a little outside the tourist areas, it's not so much the danger, but you realize that the watch must represent more than a year's salary for the majority...I won't feel comfortable....and I'm talking about my Explorer 226570, the cheapest. We have so many other things to do and enjoy, not to mention that it goes by quickly unless you have a long stay, or quad excursions in the desert for example where the watch is better elsewhere. Enjoy, and talk to your wife about the "Marajah Spa", a good address for a moment out of time, full massage, for her ! (Also don't forget to negotiate on absolutely everything (market, taxis, etc.), it's a culture of announcing a price that is way too high and discussing it!) |
Enjoy the trip, OP!

I’ve traveled to Morocco frequently for more than 30 years, and my family owns a house there. I’ve spent time mostly in Marrakech, but also in Casablanca, Agadir and smaller coastal towns like Essaouira.
It is FAR safer than any U.S. or European city, as are most Muslim countries. I have always worn my Rolexes there without any concern. Is there crime against tourists there? Yes, of course, but it’s minimal. You’re far more likely to be ripped off by over-paying for a carpet at a souk than being mugged for your Rolex. |
Take whatever stuff you can afford to lose and easily replace. Good advice for wherever you go. Not country or city specific.
|
Wear what you want, when you want. Every country has its dangers but if you are careful you’ll be fine.
