It's all about, and *only about* money. Sure, you have a great relationship and that's always a benefit, but if someone called shortly before and offered an additional $2k, I sincerely, and sadly think you'd be, as the saying goes, 'eating lunch all by yourself.'
If you disagree, fine. I used to think people are inherently decent, still do. However when it comes to business, it seems that the ruthless pursuit of the bottom line is all that matters. AND, because an AD has a staff, overhead, kids in college, this behaviour is not unfair. But, I long ago came to terms with the fact: very few want to help me just because "I'm a swell guy!" Once I got past that, no amount of ludicrous business transaction bothered me.
