My favorite restaurant is Auberge du Soleil in Rutherford (NAPA) and that's always a semi yearly treat. The rest of the time is mostly at home even though we have incredible restaurants in hole in the wall towns here, due to proximity to SF/wine culture/Culinary Institute being major players here.
I travel to your neck of the woods fairly often and am a HUGE Auberge du Soleil fan... such a beautiful spot and surrounding grounds. I've stayed at the adjoining resort as well and the concierge was kind enough to also get us into the French Laundry when we had no reservation so I'm a big fan of their service, attitude and superior sense of hospitality.

Their restaurant is top notch as well and to this day I've experienced the single most epic brunch of my life there. A lot of that had to do with the bottles that were popped but also the stunning views and again the food and service, so I get why you feel the way you do about that gem of a restaurant in an ideal location.
