While it's true that in California we don't lock people up for as long periods as some other states, especially for non-violent crime, that also cuts in the other direction - that we give criminals a chance to clear their records and start fresh, which is why when you think about it, this Rolex Robber really has no excuse for what he is doing. The last several years California's legislature has passed unprecedented new laws aimed at expunging and sealing the records of criminals who have stayed out of trouble for long enough, to give them a chance to re-enter productive society without being always dragged down by their past mistakes.
Anyone who has spent that long studying watches, to the point where he is able to rip off a professional watch dealer (one of the other victims, not me), could easily get a job in the watch profession, or even become a legitimate watch dealer in his own right. This guy may think that he has "come up" mightily through ripping off a couple or more of us in the past six months, but really the guy is selling himself short, and in the short or long run, he could really apply himself to doing something that might make him a much better living, without having to worry about how the whole world might be looking to lock him up.
Yes, I'm mad at what this guy did to me, but I think in the long run he's going to hurt himself more than anyone else if he doesn't change his ways.

Well, I feel less sorry for you after hearing your views on crime and punishment. There are an infinitesimal number of "Jean ValJeans" out there and however people arrive at a life of crime they still had choices and to do this to a fellow citizen breaks the code of conduct that we share as a civilized society. To each their own I guess, but it sounds like you're living in the right place.
