Ive only brushed a polished link, not the other way around.

I used a bergeon 5444-a abrasive block, originally I cut it to the width of of the link and did it by hand, it will take you a while before the grain looks right if you do it by hand but it is very forgiving. The closest to factory I have been able to achieve is cutting the block into a wheel and attaching it to my dremel, it results in a straighter grain and a slightly more reflective finish.

If you choose to do it by hand i've read that going over it with a few strokes with a cape cod after brushing will achieve similar results.
