Yeah, Google’s stock soared today because of this announcement. For perspective, Willow is a quantum computing chip that was able to perform a computation in under 5 minutes that would take today’s fastest computer one septillion years. Septillion is ten to the power of 25 or 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years.
It’s an incredible achievement, but they are at least ten years away before this chip will be market ready and available for any practical applications.
What is really interesting is that this chip could be available right around the same time they reach the level of ASI in terms of AI. That’s when AI might make science fiction movies look silly because it will be far more impressive than any Hollywood depiction of AI to date.
