It is an unusual chrono function for three likely reasons:
1) Unusual to need more than twelve hours since once a 12 hour chrono spins through its initial 12 hours, it is easy to simply add 12 to its time and arrive at the correct total (you would rarely be unable to determine 12 hrs has elapsed).
2) Most people rarely need to time 12+ hrs in a single go (and see above)
3) Power requirements
The combination of the above plus the fact it doesn’t add anything visually (unlike a moon phase or host of other complications with limited use)…
