I'm not sure this is entirely fair...I've had 2 Panerais in the past year or so (and I just ordered a BNIB 000 as I had to sell my others when I bought my house). I am absolutely berserk when it comes to scratches and marks. I can't stand anything destroying the look of my stuff. People berated me at another "big" site, saying how scratches "build character", how I "shouldn't care", etc. Personally, I think it's someone prerogative if they want to be anal about their property (especially their very expensive property). What is so wrong about wanting to keep something you bought in pristine condition? People always bring up the "tool watch" and "true purpose" argument, but let's be honest-99% of people buying these (and other) high-end but "tool" watches are NOT buying them to be abused. I also don't get the "scratches add character" argument...I used an analogy at that other site of a car: suppose you go out and buy a brand new BMW. Let's also say on your way home from the dealer someone bumps into you and leaves a nice crack in your bumper. I doubt you'd call it a "character" mark...more likely you couldn't dial your insurance company fast enough to get it repaired.

Scratches, marks, dings, etc. REALLY bother me. Enough so that I often get made fun of (like it seems the OP was). Is it ridiculous to wear the PAM bezel protector? Probably, since it looks very strange. But is it ridiculous to want to keep your expensive piece of jewelry in like-new shape? I don't think so.

Proud leaver-on'er of plastic wrap, stickers, and other anti-scratch paraphernalia.
