111 is a good choice for a first Panerai. I was concerned about manual winding (& no date) as well, but both turned out to be non-issues.
I originally looked at the Panerai automatics, but the 312 & similar models didn't seem to fit right, and for some unknown reason I didn't like the 104 that much.
Just make sure to budget enough extra $$ for a couple aftermarket straps.
