That looks like it was polished off. I know that even the best PVD finish will rub off with time. I've seen a PVD'd zero that was worn daily for 5 years. All the edges are rubbed lighter, but that caseback looks like it was completely cleaned off.

Here is my thought, I'd leave it as is. What does it matter that it is steel? You don't see it when worn.

Panerai has commented in the past, that it doesn't do more PVD'ed watches b/c customers complain that the finish comes off. Well, it does and that is the property of PVD. It isn't like ceramics which don't.

I bet your case still looks showroom new.
