I'd definitely go
painted - assuming you have at least one PAM with a sandwich dial in your existing collection. While
both painted and sandwich are quite unique and very much part of OP's history, I think the Sandwich dial is "the one"
(if you can only have one PAM...).
Back to the question at hand... as the wiseguys (...) of a certain Paneristi website recently noted, the perfect lineup is a
47mm 1940/1950 with sandwich dial and
44mm Luminor with painted, the latter representing the Pre-V era (1993-1997).

Yes, you are most likely correct; I too, was all worked up over the "G" models but I've recently changed my mind because:
1. The polished, smaller CG is a direct facsimile of the Pre-V CGs
2. No one has been able to answer my question about CG-robustness; i.e. is the thicker (not larger) CG functionally better* ...?
*Logically, it would seem to be, but as I treat all my "serious" watches with respect, I'm not all that overly-concerned about CG robusness and I'd rather have an all-polished, all pre-V representative E/F model
