I don't see them as a threat to mechanical watches. The pleasure of owning a purely mechanical watch is knowing that someone or some persons actually put together a multitude of small mechanical parts that will continue to work long after it comes time to replace the batteries on those electronic marvels (which themselves will become obsolete very quickly as each new generation surpasses the last one).
