Honestly to have them show their best, I'd say 10-15 years. If you store them in less than ideal conditions, maybe 3-5 years. But, he's right, you need a place that does not swing in temperature and is relatively cool. Temperature swings will ruin wine in short order. If you have an undisturbed area in a basement, that would work well. The kitchen is the absolute worst place in the house.
