Get a comfortable oxford cap toe in black, with a rubber sole. A black oxford cap toe is the traditional business shoe. They go with everything from a tux to a sport coat, and are appropriate in any business setting, funeral, wedding, or red carpet.
Whole grain leather is best, as it shines up really well, doesn't get ugly creases, and lasts a long time. Don't sweat goodyear welt or recraftable, you probably won't wear them enough in your field to wear them out anyway.
