I think that 35+/- years ago, there wasn't as much thought about social security numbers and identity theft as there is today. At that time, it probably made sense - could easily tie the watch to him if anything happened to it. Today it's obviously different.
I agree with the folks above - send it to Rolliworks and have them help you out with it.
